Erin Treis posted her second double-double (25 assists and 12 digs) in three matches this season, and
Vitoria Campos Mello tallied a match-high 19 points, 13 kills and four aces for the Owls. Despite those performances, William Woods (2-1) lost 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 20-25, 25-15, 15-11) to Culver-Stockton (1-1) Wednesday at Charles Field House.
In the first set, the Owls started strong, jumping out to a two-point lead twice at 4-2 and 5-3, with Campos Mello recording WWU's first kill of the contest and one of her two in the set. Following that, the Wildcats went on a 3-0 run to take a 6-5 advantage, as the Owls were unable to take the lead again in the first set.
Culver-Stockon led by as much as six points (22-16) in the first set. During set one, the Owls recorded nine kills, seven errors and a .057 hitting percentage, while the Wildcats posted 13 kills, eight blocks and a .119 hitting percentage.
Regrouping, Woods maintained its positive play to begin set two, going on a 4-0 run to hold as large as a seven-point advantage at 13-6. The Owls won all four points off the Wildcats' errors.Â
Lauren Adams paced WWU's offense in the second set, registering three kills. The Owls tallied 11 kills, six errors and a .192 hitting percentage to Culver-Stockton's nine kills, 10 errors and -.036 hitting percentage in the second set.
Unlike the first two sets, William Woods didn't go in front early in set three. The Owls finished how they wanted, though. They went ahead by six twice, at 23-17 and 24-18, with a kill by
Marissa Solverud giving them the first of those leads.
Campos Mello went on a tear in the third set, putting up five kills, four aces, two assists and one block. Woods notched 14 kills, six errors and a .211 hitting percentage, and the Wildcats had nine kills, five errors and a .118 hitting percentage in the third set.
The Owls couldn't gain the upper hand in the fourth set. Culver-Stockton's 4-0 run from its 13-9 to 16-9 advantage and 5-0 from 20-14 to 24-14 proved decisive.
William Woods recorded eight kills, nine errors and a -.036 hitting percentage, while the Wildcats tallied 11 kills, four errors and a .259 hitting percentage in set four.
Until the final four points, the game-deciding fifth set was anyone's for the taking. In that set, the Owls led twice and tied it three times before the Wildcats went on top for good at 8-6. However, WWU brought it to a two-point contest at 12-10 on Treis' ace. Culver-Stockton outscored the Owls 3-1 after that to win its first game against them since 2018, snapping Woods' four-game winning streak in the matchup.
For set five, the Owls had seven kills, five errors and a .091 hitting percentage, to the Wildcats' eight kills, two errors and a .316 hitting percentage.
