Box Score 2 HASTINGS, Neb. - Taking on two of the top three Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference teams, RV Bethel College (4-2) and No. 24 Kansas Wesleyan (2-0),
Vitoria Campos Mello with 21 kills (match-high 14 vs. KWU) and
Erin Treis' third double-double of the season (17 assists and 16 digs vs. KWU) were standouts for William Woods volleyball (2-3) on Day 1 of the Hastings College Classic.
The Owls were swept in both matches, falling 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 against the Threshers and 25-19, 25-19 and 26-24 against the Coyotes Friday at Lynn Farrell Arena.
Keeping it tight in the middle of the first set, William Woods went on top at 9-8 on an
Andressa M. Borges kill and 10-9 on a
Pamela Durazo kill. Those were the Owls' only leads in set one, as Borges' four kills led the way.
William Woods posted its only double-digit kills set against Bethel in set one with 10, with six errors and a .114 hitting percentage. The Threshers tallied 14 kills, seven errors and a .189 hitting percentage.
Bethel never trailed in the second set, with Campos Mello's four kills pacing Woods. For set two, the Owls notched eight kills, 11 errors and a -.086 hitting percentage, while the Threshers posted 11 kills, five errors and a .222 hitting percentage.
Performing its best in the third set, Woods held the advantage seven times, with Campos Mello giving the Owls two of their leads, once on a kill at 14-13 and block at 13-12.
Mya Clapp handed WWU its largest lead on her kill at 9-6 and its final advantage at 16-15.
For set three, William Woods registered nine kills, eight errors and a .029 hitting percentage, to Bethel's 13 kills, four errors and a .281 hitting percentage.
Playing back-to-back contests, WWU showed improvement versus a more formidable Kansas Wesleyan, but it didn't do enough to take a set from the Coyotes.
In the first set, the Owls took their largest lead at 13-11, and their longest run was 3-0, which put them up for the first time at 11-10. Campos Mello shined in that set, tallying seven kills and a block.
William Woods recorded 15 kills, four errors and a .324 hitting percentage, while Kansas Wesleyan had 18 kills, three errors and a .405 hitting percentage for set one.
The Coyotes controlled most of the second set, as the Owls only went in front once at 5-4 thanks to a Kansas Wesleyan attack error, its fourth straight miscue, which accounted for all four points in WWU's match-high 4-0 run. Campos Mello remained WWU's offensive leader, with four kills - three on a 3-0 personal run - one block and an ace.
During set two, the Owls registered 10 kills, seven errors and a .081 hitting percentage, and the Coyotes posted 17 kills, six errors and a .256 hitting percentage.
Although the 26-24 third-set result was the closest, Woods never took the lead but did comeback to tie it at 24 when it scored four points unanswered. In that stretch,
Lauren Adams and
Luciana Paiva Pereira put down a kill, Treis served an ace and Kansas Wesleyan committed an attack error.
While WWU recorded a set-high 16 kills in set three, it also made a set-high eight errors while hitting .178. The Coyotes had 18 kills, three errors and a .326 hitting percentage.
The Owls conclude play in the Hastings College Classic on Saturday. They take on Central Christian (0-2) at 10 a.m. and host Hastings (3-1) at noon.
