BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – William Woods University (17-9, 8-6 Heart) hit the road Friday night for a Heart of America matchup against Baker University (15-8, 9-6 Heart).
The Wildcats came out strong, jumping to an early lead that put the Owls in a difficult position from the start. Baker's offensive pressure proved too much in the opening set, as the Owls fell 25-9.
Woods regrouped in the second set and showed more fight behind a strong effort from Pamela Durazo, who led the team with seven points. Despite the improved play, the Owls couldn't quite close the gap, dropping the second set 25-18.
With their backs against the wall, the Owls battled throughout a tightly contested third set. Woods held a late lead and appeared poised to extend the match, but Baker rallied to take the final points and secure the 25-23 win, sweeping the match 3-0.
The Owls will have a quick turnaround as they remain in Kansas to face Benedictine College in Atchison on Saturday, with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m.
