FULTON, Mo – The Women's basketball team hosted its conference home opener against the Peru State Bobcats (4-4, 1-0 Heart).
William Woods University (0-3, 0-1 Heart) jumped out to a quick 14-6 lead over the Bobcats as the Owls would use their momentum to keep the lead for the rest of the quarter. The Owls would force 8 turnovers out of the Bobcats and capitalize with Abby Ailivernia leading the way with 7 points and 3 steals, and
Jersee Wren adding 6 points, with the Owls heading into the second half up 19-14.
In the second quarter, the momentum shifted as the Owls' offense cooled and Peru State began to find a rhythm inside. The Bobcats briefly took the lead, but WWU battled back, trading buckets until halftime. Six points from
Mya Pflasterer kept the Owls close, heading into the locker room trailing 39-36.
Coming out of the half, the Owls' offense would struggle as Peru took this as their opportunity to strike. With their sluggish start, Bobcats would grab their biggest lead of the game and head into the final quarter up 56-45 over the Owls.
With the Owls needing a bounce back, Pflasterer would give them a much-needed boost with 12 points in the fourth quarter to bring Woods back into the equation late in the fourth quarter. With the Owls forcing 25 turnovers from the Bobcats, the size from Peru would be too much for Woods to overcome, as they would fall 71-66.
Woods is back for some more conference action at Anderson Arena as Missouri Valley will come to town on Wednesday with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
