MARSHALL, Mo. - Coming up against more than formidable Heart of America Athletic Conference opponent No. 8 Missouri Valley College (5-5) with nine ranked grapplers,
Abby Piper picked up all of William Woods University's (0-10) points as the Owls fell 32-5 to the Vikings Tuesday at Burns Athletic Complex.
In the longest bout of the night, WWU's Piper pinned MVC's Elizabeth Hubbard in 3:11 to take the 180-pound matchup. After beginning her college career 9-0, the Owls'
Mariyah Brumley (207) was defeated for the first time, and it was the second-longest contest of the night as Vikings graduate student Kelani Corbett - ranked fifth in the NAIA at 180 - took it by 12-0, 2:42 technical fall.
"Another tough opponent tonight," William Woods wrestling coach
Jacob Lorentz said. "They had a very loud and hostile environment that definitely rattled us a bit. They are a great team with a lot of experience. I know it sounds like a broken record; that's what this conference is, night in, night out. I was glad we maintained our composure and competed. We will regroup and go to Baker on Saturday."
The Owls take the mat for the final time this regular season, competing in the Jimmy May Open, hosted by Heart foe No. 14 Baker University at 9 a.m. Saturday at Collins Center in Baldwin City, Kansas.
