Brumley Earn’s WWU’s First-Ever Women’s Wrestling All-American Honor

PARK CITY, Kan. - In just her first semester at William Woods University, Mariyah Brumley, a freshman from Lebanon, Mo., already made history as the Owls' first-ever women's wrestling All-American, placing seventh at 207 pounds in the Third Annual NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championships, which took place Friday and Saturday at Park City Arena.

Brumley, ranked 19th in the NAIA at 207, scored 11½ points and pulled above her weight, picking up a couple of upsets among her three pinfall victories.

After receiving a Championship Round 1 bye, Brumley took her only loss Friday to the eventual national champion, No. 2/No. 3 seed Savannah Isaac of No. 1 Life University in Championship Round 2 by a 52-second pinfall. Brumley advanced past Consolation Round 2 with a bye, then finished Day 1 by beating Hailey Romero of No. 10 Doane University in a 55-second pinfall in Consolation Round 3 and No. 10/No. 8 seed Hayeni Costa of No. 7 Lindsey Wilson College in Consolation Round 4.

On Saturday, Brumley fell by an 8-0 decision to No. 5/No. 5 seed Hannah Jackson of No. 11 Ottawa University in Consolation Round 5 before beating No. 6/No. 6 seed Alysse Phillips of (RV) Lourdes University by a 47-second pinfall in the seventh-place match.

Brumley finished her freshman campaign with a 19-5 record.

"Mariyah had a fantastic semester for The Woods," William Woods wrestling coach Jacob Lorentz said. "She is an unreal talent, and we are so happy to see her make history on the national stage. Mariyah was often overlooked in the rankings, but in the end, she finished as William Woods' first All-American and top seven in the country as a true freshman. She has worked very hard over the years and earned this prestigious honor this weekend!"
