Owls Drop Two to Park

FULTON, Mo. - On Tuesday, William Woods University (9-10) played at Backer Sports Complex for the first time this season, losing 3-0 and 7-0 to future conference opponent/old American Midwest Conference foe Park University (12-6).

On an unseasonably warm afternoon with 23 mph winds heading toward home plate, neither team recorded an extra-base hit in Game 1: The Owls scored no runs on three hits and committed no errors, while the Pirates had three runs on 11 hits and made one error.

Park capitalized on a leadoff single in the top of the first, driving in that batter two hitters later, smacking an RBI base hit to left field.

Two innings later, the Pirates concluded the game's scoring and put up a two-spot. On the third and final single of the top of the third, Park plated a run on the base hit to right field, and then it sent home the third run on a sacrifice fly to left field.

William Woods' Corynne Miller and Brooklynn Spillman reached twice, the former on a single and a walk and the latter on a one-bagger and an HBP. Addie Rhea also had a single for the Owls.

Taylor Baumhoer (5-4) was William Woods' starting pitcher, and she went the distance and took the loss in the circle. She struck out four and gave up three earned runs.

In Game 2, William Woods scored no runs on one hit and recorded two errors, and Park plated seven runs on nine hits and played a clean game in the field.

The Pirates filled the bases in the top of the first on a single, walk and fielder's choice with one out. Park took advantage of it, sending one home on a groundout to second base.

After a scoreless second and third inning, Park had a big inning in the fourth, finishing the game's scoring by plating six runs on six hits, one walk and one error.

Mariah Prince registered the Owls' lone hit, a leadoff single in the bottom of the second, and she had a stolen base. WWU's Sammy Lohnes also swiped a bag, and she reached on a walk. Kaitlyn Plassmeyer also received a free pass for the Owls.

Sarah Randermann (3-6) went all seven innings in the circle for William Woods, giving up six earned runs, walking four and punching out one.

The Owls will be back at Backer for their AMC-opening doubleheader against Hannibal-LaGrange University (3-13), which begins at 2 p.m. Friday.
