ST. LOUIS - While student-teaching, William Woods University's
Mekayla Gibson posted her fourth straight school record time, hitting the NAIA 'B' Standard in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36 minutes and 52 seconds in the WashU Distance Carnival, hosted by NCAA Division III Washington University in St. Louis Thursday and Friday at Francis Olympic Field.
With Thursday's 10k performance the latest, Gibson's streak of four consecutive school record displays reaches back to the American Midwest Conference Indoor Championship.
"I cannot express how proud I am of Mekayla's effort today," William Woods track and field assistant coach
Gregory A. Keeler said. "She ran a tactically impressive race in a field consisting of NCAA Division I and Division II runners from across the Midwest."
On Friday, the Owls'
Hailey Gerard ran a new personal best, American Midwest Conference-leading time in the 5k, clocking in at 17:58.37.
"Hailey came here with a goal to break the 18-minute barrier," Keeler said. "She set a strict plan for her race, and she executed it flawlessly. I am so proud of her effort today, and I feel like this will be a launching pad for her into the second half of the season."
William Woods will send its full team to the CMU Invite, which future conference opponent Central Methodist University hosts from Friday to Saturday at Davis Field & Hairston Track in Fayette.
