Mustangs Too Much for Owls in 5-Set Thriller

Fulton, Mo – In their conference home opener, William Woods University (9-3, 2-1 HAAC), faced off against another conference opponent in Mount Mercy University (7-2, 2-0 HAAC).

In a game where Senior Setter, Erin Tries, was recognized for her 2000 career assists, she achieved during a match-up against York College, fireworks were had as this match went all the way to five sets. The first set of the match would set the precedent for the rest of the match, as this set featured a lot of back and forth between the Owls and Mustangs. Both teams traded blows throughout the match, but the Mustangs ultimately went on a 9-1 run, which propelled them to a 25-19 first-set win.

The second set was more of the same as both teams traded blows the whole set. Luciana Pavia Periera was on fire to start this set as she recorded 3 kills in the first 6 points of the set. To go along with Luciana, Pamela Durazo, and Giovanna Ishii, each would record 3 kills to jolt the owls to a set victory of 20-25.

The third set was all Mustangs as the Owls had no answers for the Mustangs.  In a set where the Owls just could not get things going, the Mustangs ended up winning the 3rd set 25-13.

In a true team fashion, the Owls bounced back in the 4th set, with Luciana leading the charge with 5 kills, with Ivi Marcolino recording 3 kills, and Lorenza Lagana with 2 kills. The Mustangs tried to muster a comeback, but the Owls outlasted this effort to win the 4th set 25-23.

The 5th set saw some back and forth to start, as each team traded the lead back and forth until the 8th point. The Mustangs were just ultimately too much for the Owls, as they finished their night on an 8-1 run to seal the deal 15-8.

The Owls have a quick turnaround as they host Clarke University at 12:00 p.m., another Heart of America Conference opponent, in Anderson Arena.
