Owls Not Able to Overcome The Wildcats

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The William Woods University women's basketball team (2-22, 2-17 Heart) fell on the road Wednesday evening to Baker University (4-22, 2-17 Heart) by a final score of 79-68.

The Wildcats opened the game on a 27-18 run in the first period, forcing William Woods to play from behind early. The Owls responded well in the second quarter, tightening up defensively and outscoring Baker 20-14 to cut into the deficit heading into halftime. 

William Woods continued to compete in the third, putting together their highest-scoring frame of the night with 28 points, but Baker matched the intensity and carried a 65-66 advantage into the final period. In the fourth, the Wildcats were able to create separation at the free throw line and capitalize on key possessions down the stretch, outscoring the Owls 14-2 in the final quarter as the Owls would fall to Baker, 79-68. 

Abby Alvernia led the way offensively for William Woods with 15 points, while Mariah Prince added 14, with each having 7 rebounds. Layla Young chipped in 12 points to round out the Owls' top scorers. 

William Woods will look to regroup as they have their final game of the season in Anderson Arena for Senior Day as thet host Mount Mercy for a 12:00 p.m. start.
