ATCHISON, Kan. – William Woods University (10-11) wrapped up its series with Benedictine College (11-8) on Sunday, managing just one run across the doubleheader as the Owls fell 6-0 in game one and 7-1 in game two.
Benedictine wasted no time taking control in the opener, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to put William Woods in an early deficit. The Ravens added three more in the third, stretching the lead to 6-0.
The Owls were unable to generate much offense in game one, as Benedictine's starter tossed a complete-game shutout to secure the win and hand William Woods the loss.
Trailing 2-1 in the series entering game two, the Owls looked to salvage a split, but the Ravens struck early again with three runs in the first inning. Benedictine added one more in the third and three in the fifth to build a 7-0 advantage.
William Woods broke through with a run at the top of the seventh, but it was too little, too late as the Owls dropped the finale 7-1.
With the series loss, William Woods will look to bounce back next weekend when it opens its second Heart of America Conference series against Park University on Saturday at noon.
