Owls Head Into Conference With a Series Split

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – William Woods (9-8) finished up their weekend series with St. Mary's (5-14) as they split the day once again, dropping game one 7-4 and winning the final game 17-4 to split another series on the year.

In game one, the Spires would jump on the Owls quickly, putting up two runs in the bottom of the second and adding another on in the bottom of the second to jump out to a quick 5-1 lead over the Owls.

Brayden Groseclose would cut into the lead in the second with a solo home run, but would be the only offense for the Owls until the fifth inning. Jude Gremillion would start off the inning with a triple and would be followed by a sacrifice fly from Kaden Kinsler and a single from Aidan Gaither to get within a run of the Spires.

St. Mary's would add another two runs in the bottom of the sixth and go on to silence the offense for the Owls to finish the game and walk away with the 7-4 win over the Owls to open up the day.

Game two says the Owls stay on a familiar script from this season, with the offense showing up and showing out in the final game of the series.

A few gifts from St. Mary's defense would allow the Owls to get on the board for two following a Colby Caton single for a quick 2-0 lead to start the game. Another two would come across in the top of the second with a Cam Casso single to score two and increase the lead to 4-0.

Another 3 runs would be added on for the Owls, and before the Spires could get their offense going, they were down 10-0 with singles from Kinsler and Jackson Kirn to give their Owls a more than comfortable lead.

St. Mary's would try to dig into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Owls' offense would respond with a 7-run top of the sixth inning.

An Evan Rainey Double would start the scoring with a double to clear the bases loaded with Owl's runners, followed by a sacrifice fly from Bennet Greenhagen to score Rainey. A couple more quality at-bats from the Owls would cap off a 7-run inning and route them to a 17-4 win to cap off the series.

The Owls wrap up their non-conference schedule as they head into Heart of America play next week to play Benedictine in Atchison, Kansas, on Saturday for a noon first pitch.
