Woods Split the Day at St. Mary's

LEAVENWORTH, Mo. – William Woods University (8-7) traveled to face the University of St. Mary (4-13) on Saturday, splitting the doubleheader as the Owls dropped game one 4-0 before bouncing back with an 11-1 win in game two.

In game one, Gavin Allen took the bump for the Owls and tossed 3.1 innings while striking out four. The Spires broke through in the third inning with two runs to force Allen out of the game.

St. Mary added two more runs in the fourth and held the Owls' offense in check the rest of the way. William Woods managed just four hits across seven innings as the Spires secured the 4-0 win in the opener.

Game two saw the Owls flip the script early as the offense got going in the first inning. Kaden Kinsler delivered an RBI single to bring home Cam Casso and give William Woods a quick 1-0 lead. The Spires responded in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1.

The Owls manufactured another run in the second inning with a double steal that allowed Aidan Gaither to score from third, putting William Woods back in front 2-1.

That would be all the support AJ Vasquez would need as he delivered a strong outing on the mound. Vasquez threw six innings, striking out three while allowing just one run to keep the Spires' offense quiet.

The Owls broke the game open in the fifth inning, plating six runs to take control. Key singles from Gaither and Ryan Retone fueled the rally, and Jude Gremillion capped off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to score Casso and extend the lead to 8-1.

William Woods added three more runs over the final two innings, allowing Ethan Rose to close out the game and secure the 11-1 victory to earn the split on the day.

The Owls return to action tomorrow to wrap up the non-conference series against St. Mary's, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
