GULF SHORES, Ala.- William Woods University softball (6-9) rounded out their Gulf Coast Invitational trip with a 9-0 win over Georgetown (Ky.) on Sunday afternoon. The Owls, who were originally scheduled against two different opponents, had to battle adversity from the elements for their last game of the weekend.
After a scoreless first, Woods opened the scoring in the top of the second when Brooklyn Spillman singled to left field to score Myla Inman. The Owls tacked on three more runs in the top half of the third. Faith Karr led off the inning with a single to center, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. The sweet swinging bat of Ella Aguiar forced an errant throw, leading to the Woods' first run of the frame. Inman advanced Aguiar on her first single of the day, advancing to second on the throw to third to set the runners at second and third. Addison Kusgen singled to bring home Aguiar and advance Inman. The Woods tallied their last run of the frame on an errant pitch, leaving Inman to waltz her way home while growing the score to four-nil.
William Woods tacked on a lone run in the sixth inning on another errant pitch that scored Lexi Lewis, before the offense exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh. The Owls paired a free pass with four singles in the frame, with the big hit coming off the bat of Aguiar who drove in two runs on base knock back up the middle.
The Owls are set to return this weekend with Heart of America Athletic Conference play at Missouri Valley College in Marshall.
