DAVENPORT, Iowa. – William Woods (7-9, 6-3 Heart) traveled to St. Ambrose (9-4, 7-2 Heart) for the first round of the Heart Conference tournament, where they could not overcome the bees and would fall 11-7 in the final minutes of the game.
St. Ambrose got out to an early 2-0 lead over the Owls in the first quarter with two quick goals. The Owls' defense would tighten up with multiple caused turnovers and safes from goalie
Zach Hearn as the Owls' offense couldn't find the back of the net.
Owls would get their scoring started early in the second quarter when a turnover from the bees allowed
Jack Brackin to find the back of the net for his first goal of the day and cut into the lead of the bees. Not a minute later, Brackin would find the back of the net again to tie the game up for the Owls.
The Bees would respond with two goals of their own later in the second quarter to grow their lead over the Owls by two.
Ethan NewMyer would find
Emmet Mathis and
Jack Brackin for two consecutive goals to knot up the game at four.
Joey Weingardt would find the back of the net in the final minutes of the half as the Owls took a 5-4 lead into the half.
Owls' defense would come out strong out of the half, holding the Bees scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half before St. Ambrose would break that streak with a goal to even the game at five apiece. The Bees would tack on another goal to regain the lead before the end of the third quarter.
Joey Weingardt would tie the game up in the fourth with a goal to even the game at six apiece. St. Ambrose would have the last say in this game, as they would put up 5 consecutive goals to go up 11-6 over the Owls late in the game.
With all the momentum on the side of St. Ambrose, NewMyer tried to get the Owls' offense going with a goal, but it wouldn't be enough as the Owls would fall in their final game of the year, 11-7.
Lacrosse will return next spring, looking to build off this season and making their run in the conference next year.
