The William Woods University women's soccer team fought to a double overtime tie with Missouri Baptist University Tuesday night on Firley Field. The 1-1 tie was the final American Midwest Conference match for the Owls.
The Owls took a 1-0 lead into the half on a goal from
Kelsey Sanders (Jefferson City, Mo.). Sanders scored off an assist from
Kristen Pelley (St. Peters, Mo.). It was the 11th goal of the season for Sanders. She leads the Owls in goals scored and points. Pelley now has three assist on the year for the Owls.
Missouri Baptist scored its lone goal off a penalty kick in the second half. Courtney Young was fouled in the box and tied the match for the Spartans.
MBU had another scoring opportunity on a second penalty kick in the second half. Sarah O'Donnell's attempted was thwarted by WWU goalkeeper
Kelly Abernathy (St. Charles, Mo.). The match would end in a 1-1 tie in regulation.
Neither team could find the back of the next during two overtime periods. The AMC match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Abernathy recorded five saves for William Woods in goal. She now has 47 saves on the season.
The Owls outshot the Spartans 14-7. The Owls placed 10 shots on goal.
Missouri Baptist is now 5-10-1 on the year and 4-3-1 in the AMC. William Woods is now 7-7-2 on the season and 6-3-1 in league play. The Owls finish the regular season on Saturday. They host McKendree University at 1 pm on Firley Field.
