The William Woods University men's soccer team closes out the 2012 regular season schedule on Monday night against Park University. Kickoff for the match, presented by Holiday Inn Express, is set for 7 p.m.
The Matchup
To borrow a phrase from Al Davis, the mindset of both teams on Monday will be “Just Win Baby.” The teams bring identical 3-3-1 conference records into the match and are guaranteed to face each other in the first round of the AMC Postseason Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 3. The winner of today's match will earn the no. 4 seed in the tournament and host next Saturday's match. In the event of a tie, the Owls will hit the road on the basis of goal differential in conference games, as WWU sits at +1 on the year with Park at +2.
Last Time Out
Despite a strong showing on Saturday at Lyon, the Owls ran into a bit of bad luck as they dropped a 3-2 result.
Marcelo Carreiro and
Joao Paulo Parra scored for the Owls, but an unfortunate own goal in the 36th minute was enough to change the complexion of the game for the worse.
Even Flow
The draw against Missouri Baptist was the first tie on the year for William Woods. It was the first 0-0 tie for WWU since Oct. 15, 2011 at Harris-Stowe. Also, it was the first tie at Firley Field since Oct. 3, 2009, when the Owls tied Mount Mercy College 2-2.
AMC Winning Season
A win tonight would give William Woods its first winning season in AMC play since 2009. The Owls currently stand at 3-2-1 with two conference games left. It would be the third time in head coach
Nathan Mason's five years that his team finished at .500 or above in the AMC. (2009, 2011) It would also be the third time in program history a team finishes above .500 in the AMC. The two previous times came in 2001 and 2009.
National Rankings
The Owls rank in the top 20 in the NAIA in four different categories: sixth in shots/game (21.81), eighth in shots on goal/game (10.44), 18th in total assists (36) and 19th in assists/game (2.25).
Conference Rankings
After spending much of the season at the top spot, the Owls were recently edged down to second in shots per game with their pace of 21.65 just behind Lyon's 21.69 average.
The Owls rank second in shots on goal/game with 10.30, and are third across a host of categories: goals/game (2.76), total goals (47), assists/game (2.24) and total assists (38).
Sophomore
Luca Stroeter is in a three-way tie for fourth place in total assists (7) with Dawit Gebremariam (Park) and Agustin Concha (Hannibal-LaGrange). He also ranks sixth in assists/game at 0.41.
Junior
Marcelo Carreiro ranks fourth in total points with 24 and fourth in total goals with 10.
A Look At Park University
The Pirates come into Tuesday's match with a 6-8-1 overall record and a 3-3-1 AMC record.
Park is unbeaten in its last two games after snapping a short two-game losing streak and comes off a 1-1 tie against Columbia on Friday.
The team features a balanced offensive attack with three players scoring at least four goals, Anass Moudfir leads the team with six, Richard Osterloh has collected five and Carlos Trombini has contributed four.
Dawit Gebremariam leads the team with seven assists.
