FULTON, Mo. -- Kristen Bauer's record-breaking performance helps the William Woods University volleyball team remain perfect in American Midwest Conference play, as the Owls defeated Freed-Hardeman University 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-22) on Saturday evening.
Bauer collected 18 kills in the straight set victory, setting a school record for the most kills in a three-set match. The St. Charles, Mo., native hit an impressive .548 on the afternoon. William Woods (11-14, 5-0 AMC) got 44 kills on the day, as six Owls collected at least three kills on the day.
Emily Becker also had a solid day offensively, as the sophomore collected nine kills on a .450 hitting percentage. As a team, WWU hit .330 on the afternoon.
The Owls jumped out a 12-5 lead to start the first set. The fast start helped ignite the Owls a 25-14 set win.
William Woods jumped out to another sizable lead in the second frame, as they held a 12-6 advantage after the set's first 18 points. Just like in set one, William Woods never relinquished its lead as they took the 25-16 victory, giving them a 2-0 lead.
In the decisive third set, WWU faced an 18-16 deficit, yet the Owls were able to close out the set on a 9-4 run to take the frame 25-22 and collect the straight set victory.
WWU's defense was on full display this afternoon, as they collected 56 digs and held the Lady Lions to a .150 hitting percentage. Abbie O'Mara, who entered the match third in the NAIA in total digs, posted a match-high 27 digs.
Daymari Brito led the way for Freed-Hardeman (9-8, 3-3 AMC) with 12 kills, yet the Owls defense limited her to a .235 hitting percentage.
Freshman setter Sara Stevenson posted a double-double for the match by handing out a match-high 35 assists and collecting 14 digs. It is the 15th double-double that the Belleville, Ill., native has collected this season.
William Woods will be back in action on Oct. 15 when they travel to Hannibal-LaGrange University for an AMC contest. So far this season, the Lady Trojans are 7-13 on the year and an even 2-2 in league play. First serve for this match is set for 7 p.m.
