No. 23 William Woods Suffers a 77-70 Overtime Loss To No. 20 Lyon College

Santos has recorded a new career-high in points in her last two games.
Box Score BATESVILLE, Ark. – A Priscila Santos double-double wasn't enough as the no.23-ranked William Woods University women's basketball team fell in overtime to no. 20-ranked Lyon College 77-70 on Saturday afternoon.

William Woods (19-4, 10-3 AMC) held a 36-8 advantage in points off the bench, but Lyon College (22-3, 12-1 AMC) erased an eight point halftime deficit and outscored WWU 13-6 in overtime to give the Owls their second road loss to a top 25 team in the last three weeks.

 After a back and forth first half, the Owls used a late 12-4 run, that was capped off by a Blake French three-point shot at the buzzer, to close out the half giving them a 36-28 lead.

William Woods maintained its lead for the first eight minutes of the second frame as they held a 49-42 lead with 11:58 remaining. From that point the Scots went on an 8-2 run to pull within one at 51-50 with 7:30 left to play.

The Owls fended off Lyon College for the next 2:16 seconds, but a Debbie Onukwube layup gave the Scots their first lead of the half at the 4:46 mark.

Lyon built a three point lead to 60-57 with 1:59 remaining in the game, but William Woods responded with quick 4-0 run to regain the lead at 61-60 with 33 seconds left.

Christian Smith broke a 62-62 tie with a pair of free throws for four seconds left in the half forcing coach Dan Chapla to call a timeout to draw up a play. Out of the timeout, Santos nailed a buzzer-beater to tie the game at 64-64 to force overtime.

In the extra stanza with the Owls found themselves down three at 73-70 with 18 seconds remaining. They would foul Gabby Jenkins putting her at the line for a pair of crucial free throws.

Jenkins missed both charity tosses, but Onukwube grabbed the offensive board for Lyon and found Whitney Smith under the basket for the second chance layup to give Lyon College a 75-70 lead with 15 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach as Lyon College held on for the 77-70 victory.  

Santos collected her third double-double of the year with 26 points and 13 rebounds. The 26 points are a new career-high for the Brazilian native and comes just one game after she collected a then career-high 24 points on Thursday against Hannibal-LaGrange. Destani Stensrud (14 points) and Julia Wells (10 points) joined Santos in double-figures.

William Woods shot .371 from the field for the game and allowed the Scots to shoot .446 from the floor in the loss. The Owls were also out rebounded 45-39.

WWU will wrap-up its two-game Arkansas road trip on Tuesday as they travel to Walnut Ridge to take on Williams Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
