FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University softball team is still looking for their first home win of the 2013 season, as they were swept by Columbia College in a Tuesday afternoon American Midwest Conference doubleheader.
William Woods (7-11, 1-5 AMC) got a pair of outstanding pitching performances from MacKenzie Bowden and Becca Schemmer, but the Owls offense could only manage four runs through 14 innings, giving Columbia College (7-10, 2-0 AMC) its first pair of conference wins.
MacKenzie Bowden pitched seven strong innings by striking out 10 batters and giving up four runs (two earned), but the Owls offense was stagnate as they suffered the 4-2 loss in game one.
The Owls jumped on the board first in the fourth inning with an Ashley DePew double to left center that scored Lindsey LeCuru.
Columbia College gained the lead in the top of the sixth after Chelsie Crain cranked her second home run of the year to left field. An error would lead to two more Cougar runs in the top of the half of the seventh inning that saw them take a 4-1 advantage heading into the final half inning of play.
In the William Woods half of the seventh, Illissa Facchini knocked in Shelby LeCuru for the Owls' second run. WWU had runners on the corner with just one out and Lindsey LeCuru coming to the plate representing the go-ahead run.
LeCuru would ground into a game ending 6-4-3 double play, resulting in the 4-2 game one defeat.
In game two, Becca Schemmer struck out five Cougars in six innings, but two critical Owl errors in the late innings led to the righty giving up three unearned runs, as Columbia completed the sweep with a 3-2 win.
William Woods found themselves in a bases loaded, no out situation in the top of the third inning. Lindsey LeCuru grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Columbia to get Lauren Lopes out at home on a force play.
Kacey Scharnhorst pushed the game's first run across the plate in the next at bat, as her 5-3 fielder's choice scored Emily Murphy. Illissa Facchini then grounded out to second base, as the Owls were only able to score one run in the inning.
Chelsie Crain tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth, as she hit an RBI single scoring Maria Imhoff.
Columbia College gained the lead in the sixth inning, as a Shelby LeCuru error lead to two Cougar runs with two outs in the frame.
William Woods got their lead-off runner on base to start the top of the seventh, but was picked off going to second, and the next two Owls were retired as WWU suffered the 3-2 defeat.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Missouri Baptist for an AMC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
