Owls Knock Off Benedictine, Advance in Heart Conference Tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- Playing in their second game of the day, William Woods Softball (24-22) eliminated (RV) Benedictine College (33-18) in a 2-0 game. The Owls rattled off three hits and carried a two-run top of the second to their second victory on the day.

Woods, the only team etching the scoring column, tallied both of their runs int he top of the second inning. Right fielder Sara Foster led off the frame with a dribbler through the gap into right field. Senior shortstop Brooklynn Spillman advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher to place a runner in scoring position with one away. Following the sac, Mariah Prince leveled a fastball to center field to put runners at the corners.

The blazing Prince stole second on the first pitch of the next at-bat to leave two Owls in scoring position. Coming into the contest with a huge hit in game one of the day, Sammy Lohnes represented another crucial at-bat for WWU. The Owls' designated player worked a full count before firing off a single to bring in the only runs of the day for either team.

Taylor Baumhoer, in the circle for the third time in two days, tallied another complete game shutout while allowing only three hits and fanning five.

William Woods earns a spot in the afternoon slot to take on Grand View University for the second time in the tournament. Winner earns a spot in the consolation bracket championship against either Missouri Baptist or Central Methodist.
