FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University softball team earned a split in the opening series of the American Midwest Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon against Hannibal-LaGrange.
A pair of errors cost William Woods (20-14) in game one as they suffered a 7-2 setback to Hannibal-LaGrange (18-18). The Owls would regroup for game two, as Becca Schemmer no-hit the Lady Trojans in five inning 9-0 victory, forcing a decisive game three on Monday afternoon.
In the first game, both squads were able to jump on the board in the opening inning, as Courtney Neff's two-out double scored the Lady Trojan's first run. Illissa Facchini would answer Neff's RBI, by driving in Shelby LeCuru to knot the game up at 1-1 after the first inning.
In the third inning, a pair of Owl errors allowed Hannibal-LaGrange to plate three two-out runs, taking a commanding 4-1 lead. HGLU would score another run in the top half of the fifth inning, pushing its advantage to 5-1.
Lindsey LeCuru would add an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but in the next half inning the Lady Trojans pushed two more runs across the plate, as they took game one 7-2.
The Owls wasted no time scoring in game two, as they capitalized on a Hannibal-LaGrange error to take a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Another Lady Trojan's errant throw in the third allowed Lindsey LeCuru to score from second, as WWU took a 2-0 lead.
Caroline Sicht led off the fourth inning with a triple, and Shelby LeCuru would drive her in one out later, spotting the Owls a 3-0 lead. LeCuru would come around to score on William Woods' second triple of the inning, this time by Kacey Scharnhorst, to push its advantage 4-0.
Schemmer dominated the Lady Trojans in their half of the fourth, by recording her third 1-2-3 inning on the afternoon.
William Woods exploded for five runs in the top half of the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead, and Schemmer would work around a two-out walk to earn a no-hit performance, as WWU took game two 9-0.
The two teams will wrap-up their three game series tomorrow afternoon, first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
