ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's softball team will try for their first American Midwest Conference series sweep as they travel to Missouri Baptist for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
William Woods (7-11, 1-5 AMC) comes into Saturday's matchup in a tie for seventh place in the conference with Harris-Stowe and Benedictine University at Springfield.
In their last game, the Owls lost a pair of highly contested games to Columbia College, losing game one 4-2, and lost a late lead by giving up as the Cougars scored three runs in the final two at-bats to take the 3-2 win.
The Owls received a pair fine pitching performances on the day as MacKenzie Bowden struck out 10 batters in game one, and Becca Schemmer didn't allowed any earned runs through a six-inning complete game.
Bowden, despite giving up four earned runs on Tuesday, still ranks in the top 10 in the AMC in ERA at 1.57. Her 11.70 strike outs per game are second-best in the conference and ranks as the 16th-highest strikeout rate in the country.
Schemmer is providing head coach Tracy Gastineau with a reliable number two starter as she leads the Owls in wins with four. The junior has displayed great control all season, as she has only walked 10 batters in her 48.2 innings of work.
On the offensive side of the ball, Shelby LeCuru's .328 average is tops on the squad. The freshman has been solid all season for the Owls as she also leads the team in total hits with 19 and her 20 total bases are tied with Kacey Scharnhorst for the team lead.
Scharnhorst is also tied for the team lead in RBI's at nine with Kristy Plunchinski. They are also two of four Owls to hit a home run this season.
Missouri Baptist (12-8, 6-4 AMC) comes into Saturday's affair in fifth place in the conference. The Spartans have been on quite the roll of late, as they have won five of their last six games.
MBU has put up impressive offensive numbers all season, as they have posted double-digit runs in seven games this season. Megan Wildhaber's .493 batting average leads the team, while Jenna Bentlage is just behind her with a .441 average.
Bentlage has been quite the force for Missouri Baptist this season, she leads the team in RBI's (20), doubles (11), and slugging percentage (.847). She is also tied for the team lead in home runs (3) and triples (2).
Jena Trombley is the Spartan ace, as she has compiled a 9-2 record with a 1.56 ERA. She has giving up just 14 earned runs in 63 innings pitched.
