LeCuru Sisters Power Owls To An AMC Sweep Of Missouri Baptist

Shelby LeCuru hit the first home run of her collegiate career in game two.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The LeCuru sisters each hit a home run on Saturday afternoon to help the William Woods University softball team captured its first American Midwest Conference doubleheader sweep this afternoon as they took two at Missouri Baptist University.

Lindsey LeCuru knocked her second home run of the season in game one, as her younger sister, Shelby, hit the first home run of her collegiate career in game two.

William Woods (9-11, 3-5 AMC) got a pair of strong pitching performances from MacKenzie Bowden in game one, as she went eight innings and struck out 11 batters, as the Owls collected the 4-3 come-from-behind extra-inning victory. Becca Schemmer posted a dominant performance against Missouri Baptist (13-11, 7-7 AMC) as she held the Spartans to just one run on four hits, as WWU claimed the 7-1 win in game two.

In game one, Missouri Baptist got on the board first in the bottom half of the second as they benefited from an Owl error after a single from Sierra Thompson.

Lindsey LeCuru's second home run of the season tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, and William Woods would claim its first lead of the day in the next frame after Kacey Scharnhorst doubled in Megan Cooper, giving the Owls a 2-1 advantage.

The lead was short lived as Missouri Baptist took the lead back in the bottom half of the fifth after a two-run Megan Wildhaber homer.

William Woods mounted a two-out rally in the top of the seventh as Scharnhorst collected her second RBI on the afternoon with a clutch two-out RBI single to tie the game at 3-3 to force the Spartans to bat in the bottom half of the inning.

Bowden held MBU scoreless in the half inning, as retiring the Spartans in order to force extra innings.

The Owls would yet again find some two-out magic, as Macy Wierschem walked, Cooper reached on an error, and Sydnae Hatton put the ball in play and forced a second consecutive Spartan error that allowed Wierschem to score the go-ahead run.

Missouri Baptist couldn't get anything off Bowden in the bottom half of the eighth, as she slammed the door shut by striking out two Spartans in the inning to give William Woods the 4-3 win.

In game two, Shelby LeCuru broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning as she clubbed her first collegiate home run, and that sparked the Owls to place three runs in the inning to take a 3-0 lead moving to the top of the fourth.

WWU would add four more run in the bottom of the fifth as Shelby LeCuru added her second RBI of the game, knocking in Lauren Lopes. Scharnhorst followed that with a two-run RBI single to score Hatton and LeCuru.

Missouri Baptist couldn't figure out Schemmer as the righty held the Spartans to just one run on four hits, as she earned her team-leading fifth win on the year, as William Woods took game two 7-1.

The Owls will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Missouri Valley College for a Sunday afternoon non-conference doubleheader. First pitch from Marshall, Mo., is set for 2 p.m.
