MARSHALL, Mo. -- The William Woods University softball team earned a Sunday afternoon split in a non-conference doubleheader against Missouri Valley College, concluding a two-day four-game weekend.
William Woods (10-12) earned a 2-0 victory in game one, giving them a season-high three-game winning streak. It was a short lived streak, as Missouri Valley (10-8) defeated the Owls in game two 2-1.
WWU got another complete game shut out from staff ace MacKenzie Bowden, as the junior allowed only one hit while striking out 10 Vikings. It was the third consecutive start that Bowden has complied a double-digit strike out total.
The Owls jumped out to an early 1-0, as Caroline Sicht hit her first home run of the season in the top of the second.
Bowden would make the lead stand, as William Woods added an insurance run in the top half of the seventh of an Ashley DePew RBI, giving the Owls a 2-0 win in game one.
In game two, WWU jumped out to another early lead with a Lindsey LeCuru RBI double.
That would be the only run the Owls would score as Missouri Valley tied the game in the third inning, and the Vikings were able to knock in the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the seventh, to give MVC a 2-1 walk-off win.
William Woods will be back in action on Wednesday, as they jump back into conference play by hosting Harris-Stowe State. First pitch for this American Midwest Conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
