Softball Looks To Extend Winning Streak Against Baker University

Bowden is off to a stellar start to the 2014 season, as her 90 strikeouts currently rank her third overall in the NAIA.
BALDWIN CITY, Kan.—The (RV) William Woods University softball team will look to extend its three game winning streak, as the Owls square off against Baker University on Tuesday afternoon. First-pitch will start at 1 p.m.

The Owls (10-7), are coming off a 3-1 record at the Lindenwood-Belleville tournament, winning the final three games by a combined score of 18-6. Shelby LeCuru led the offense batting .700 (7-for-10), with five runs scored, two triples, six RBI, a slugging percentage of 1.200 and an on-base percentage of .786.

On the hill, Julie Scheer was dominant in her outing in the team's 5-0 victory against Roosevelt University, throwing a complete game, allowing no runs on three hits and struck out three. Senior MacKenzie Bowden also pitched well, going 2-0 in 13 2/3 innings pitched, holding a 3.59 ERA and struck out 26 batters.

On the season, the Owls are outscoring its opponents 99-52 and hold a team batting average of .275 through 17 games. Lindsey LeCuru holds the top average, batting .412 in her final season with the Owls, and is leading the team in other categories including hits (21), runs (13), doubles (five) and home runs (three).

Kacey Scharnhorst has swung the bat well as of late, moving her season average up to .341 (14-for-41) with nine runs scored, four doubles, two home runs and leads the team with 12 runs batted in.

On the mound for the Owls, the team is led by the trio of Scheer (1.95), Bowden (2.02) and Becca Schemmer (2.74), all of whom hold an ERA under 3.00.

Bowden, continues to be a dominant force on the mound, as she is 5-4 in 10 appearances, holding opponents to mere .177 batting average and has a K/BB ratio of 90/17. Her 90 strikeouts currently rank her No. 3 in the NAIA, while her 11.39 strikeouts per game is eighth-best.

Baker Universiy (7-5), has won four out of its past five games, including an 11-1 rout against No. 15-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University back on Feb. 22nd.

The Wildcats hold a team batting average of .299 and are led by Alyse Menghini hitting .400 (16-for-40) with eight runs scored, four doubles, and six RBI. Renata Dill has also been a standout hitter through 12 games, having an average of .375 and leads the team in RBI with nine.

The pitching for Baker has been led by freshman Katt Cooper, who has started off the 2014 season perfect (4-0) through four starts, having an ERA of 0.60 in 46 1/3 innings pitched and has allowed just six runs to go along with 49 strikeouts. Despite her record, Mallorie Nelson (1-4) has an ERA of 3.59 in 25 1/3 innings and opposing hitters are just batting .162 against the hurler.
