Softball Outscores Stars 21-0 In Doubleheader Victory

Begemann led the Owls in game one, going 3-for-3 with three RBI, including hitting her third home run on the season.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Mo.—The (RV) William Woods University softball team continued to dominate American Midwest Conference play, as the Owls defeated Stephens College 13-0 (five innings) in game one and shut the Stars out again in game two, winning 8-0 (five innings).

In game one, the Owls (15-8; 4-0 AMC) offense totaled 16 hits, with 10 players having at least one hit in the game.

WWU grabbed the lead right away in the top of the first, scoring four runs on five hits, to take a comfortable four-run lead. Hannah Campbell led the game off with a walk and after a stolen base, she was able to advance to third on Shelby LeCuru's single.

Kacey Scharnhorst came up next and totaled her 17th and 18th RBI on the season with a single to center, scoring Campbell and Shelby LeCuru to give the team a 2-0 lead. After a fly-out, freshman Beth Begemann tripled to center, scoring Scharnhorst and extending the teams lead to 3-0 over the Stars (2-0; 0-4 AMC).

Begemann was outstanding at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI, including hitting an inside the park home run, her third of the season, in the top of the fifth.

The fourth run in the inning, came off the bat of Brailee Schulte, who singled to right field and scored Begemann from third.

That lead was more than enough for starter MacKenzie Bowden, who picked up her eighth win on the season by only throwing 36 pitches in three innings of work and struck out all nine batters she faced.

The Owls would go on to add three more runs in the second, five in the third and Begemann capped it all off with a home run in the fifth inning and the team cruised to a 13-run victory.

Caroline Sicht also had an impressive afternoon at the plate, as she had her first three-hit game on the season, going 3-for-4 and tied Begemann with three RBI. Scharnhorst continues to swing a hot bat, closing out game one 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Emily Murphy also had her first two-hit game on the season, going 2-for-2 with one RBI, while Campbell, Shelby LeCuru, Hillary Hentges, Schulte, Sam Parsons and Grace Fritz had one hit each.

Becca Schemmer came on in relief of Bowden, throwing two innings, allowing one hit and struck out three batters.

The offense jumped on the Stars pitching again in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning on four hits.

For the second straight game, Campbell reached base to start the game, this time with a single and was able to advance to third base on Shelby LeCuru's single to left. Scharnhorst then extended her hitting streak to five games, with a single to center, which brought home her team leading 19th and 20th RBI on the year to make it 2-0 WWU.

After Murphy was hit-by-pitch, Macy Wierschem doubled to left, scoring Scharnhorst to make it 3-0 Owls. Alexi Cavins then hit a sacrifice fly to left-center field, scoring Murphy from third and WWU was up by four after one inning of play.

The team extended its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the second, getting RBI from Hannah Campbell and Shelby LeCuru and then the Owls put the game away with an RBI by Madison McCormick in the fourth and Murphy singled to center, scoring the eighth and final run of the game for the victory in the home half of the fifth.

The offense totaled 14 hits in the game, with Campbell, Shelby LeCuru, Wierschem, Cavins and Sydnae Hatton each having two hits.

Julie Scheer moved to 3-0 on the season, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and struck out three Stars.

The Owls will now be back in action on Thursday Mar. 20th in a tough AMC showdown at (RV) Columbia College. First-pitch begins at 2 p.m.
