Softball Splits Day One Doubleheader At The Lindenwood-Belleville Tournament

Shelby LeCuru had an impressive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one run scored and four RBI.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. CHARLES, Mo.—The (RV) William Woods University softball team dropped game one of the Lindenwood University-Belleville tournament 8-5 against (RV) Indiana University-Southeast, but held on for the 7-5 win against Purdue University-Calumet in game two.

The Owls (8-7), grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second despite not totaling a hit, as they were helped out by two defensive errors and starter Jenna Swain walking four batters in the inning.

In the top of the fourth, Morgan Klosterman got the Grenadiers offense going with a leadoff single, and she was followed up by her sister Lauren Klosterman hitting another single. Emily Lucas followed them up with a triple, scoring both runners and put ISU down by 3-2. The Grenadiers had a chance to tie the game, but Owls hurler Becca Schemmer retired the next three batters and held the lead intact.

In the home half of the fourth, Hannah Campbell got the inning started reaching on a one-out walk. After stealing second base, she was brought home by Shelby LeCuru tripling to left-center and giving the Owls a two run lead back at 4-2.

Things, however, changed in the top of the fifth inning, as the Grenadiers scored five runs on four hits and took a 7-4 lead after five innings of play. ISU would tally another run in the top of the seventh, extending its advantage out to 8-4.

Macy Wierschem would bring home Beth Begemann in the bottom of the seventh, who led the inning off with a single to center, but the comeback wasn't to be, as the Owls fell by three runs.

The Owls were limited to three hits by the ISU pitching, as Begemann stood out offensively for WWU, going 2-for-4 with one run scored. The 1-2-3 hitters of Campbell, Shelby LeCuru and Kacey Scharnhorst combined to go 1-for-8, but totaled four RBI.

The Grenadiers totaled 11 hits in the game, led by Lucas going 2-for-3 with one run scored and four RBI. Morgan and Lauren Klosterman also had impressive games, combining to go 3-for-6 with four runs scored and two RBI.

In game two, the Owls again took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, as Scharnhorst grounded out to second, but it did score Campbell from third, who led the inning off with a single to right field.

The offense continued rolling in the top of the second, as Wierschem singled to left to start the inning. After a fly-out, Sam Parsons doubled to left-center, putting runners on second and third with one out. Then, Megan Cooper was hit-by-pitch, which loaded the bases for leadoff hitter Campbell, who singled to left, scoring Wierschem and put WWU up 2-0.

Shelby LeCuru continued to swing the bat well, hitting another single to right, scoring Parsons which made it 3-0 Owls and the bases were still loaded for Scharnhorst, who hit a sacrifice fly that scored Cooper, which put the team ahead 4-0.

The Owls would push its lead out to 7-0 in the top of the fourth, as Shelby LeCuru singled to center, scoring Megan Cooper, who got the inning started with a single to left. After a Peregrines pitching change, Scharnhorst doubled to left-center, scoring Shelby LeCuru from second base to make it 6-0.

After a passed ball and a walk to Lindsey LeCuru, the Owls pulled off a double steal, which scored Scharnhorst and put WWU up by seven.

Purdue-Calumet (5-1), would finally get to the Owls starter MacKenzie Bowden in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits, but still trailed by four.

The Peregrines would then only trail by two runs after five innings, after Ana Duda hit a one out two run homer to left-center in the bottom of the fifth. Schemmer, however, came on in relief of Bowden, throwing two 2/3 innings of shutout ball and the Owls were able to hold on for the two-run victory.

After struggling to get hits in game one, the Owls totaled nine in game two, led by again the 1-2-3 hitters of Campbell, Shelby LeCuru and Scharnhorst who combined to go 6-for-9 with three runs scored and six RBI.

On the hill, Bowden picked up the victory going four 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and struck out eight batters.

The Owls will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. against host Lindenwood University-Belleville and then to close out the tournament, the team will play Roosevelt University at 4:30 p.m.
