FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team will look to capture its fifth straight win on the season and stay perfect in the American Midwest Conference (AMC), as Freed-Hardeman University comes to town Friday for a 7:00 p.m. showdown.
The Owls (15-9; 5-0 AMC), are coming off a dominating display Wednesday night, which saw the team cruise past Harris-Stowe State University in three straight sets (25-9, 25-7, 25-12). WWU ended the night with 36 kills and a season-high .431 attack percentage as a team.
Junior
Stephanie Davis paced the way with nine kills, while
Cierra Merz contributed eight digs and
Lauren Rodewald chipped in with five kills.
Brittney Engelbrecht handed out a game-high 24 assists, as
Melanie Kala led the team defensively, gathering eight digs.
On the season, statistically, the Owls continue to impress in the AMC, as the team leads the conference in kills (1129) and assists (994), while coming in second in the block category with 147.
Becker, endures to guide the Owls, as the senior has totaled 278 kills, sitting her a top of the AMC and ranking her 25
th in the nation. She also has recorded a career-high 10 double-double performances on the year, while posting a team-high 62 blocks.
Engelbrecht, the Owls setter, also continues to have a stellar year, as the sophomore has handed out 887 assists on the year which paces the AMC and is sixth best in the nation. The Jefferson City, Missouri native has earned AMC Setter of the Week Award twice this year.
Defensively,
Shelby Hinshaw leads the team with 308 digs, however, freshman
Melanie Kala who is this week's AMC Defender of the Week honoree has had a break out year, posting 271 digs with only committing 17 errors on the season.
Freed-Hardeman comes into Friday's match-up with a 12-5 overall record and are 3-1 in AMC play. Just like the Owls, the Lady Lions are on a hot streak, currently riding a five game streak. In the team's last outing, FHU defeated Cumberland University in a five set nail biter.
Allie Moss has been an offensive threat for FHU on the year, as she has totaled a team-high 248 kills, averaging 3.8 kills per set, while she also leads the team with a .333 hitting percentage. The setting duo of Sara Denton and Emily Humphry have combined a season total of 572 assists, as Michelle paces FHU in digs (314) and services aces (30).
