Softball Looks For Its First AMC Wins On The Year Against Missouri Baptist

Waskow is 2-1 in her last three starts and has totaled a team-high 23 strikeouts.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The No. 19-ranked William Woods University softball team will head to St. Louis, Missouri, on Friday for its first American Midwest Conference (AMC) games, as the team takes on Missouri Baptist University. First-pitch of the doubleheader will be thrown at 2 p.m.

The team was scheduled to play Harris-Stowe State on Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m., but those games have been cancelled.  

The Owls (7-10), are coming off a 2-0 showing against Culver-Stockton College in its last time out on Tuesday, as they won game one in wild fashion 9-8 (8 innings) and the offense took over in game two, winning 10-4.

With the two wins, the Owls have now won four out of its last five games, and have gotten its offense going during that stretch, as the team is now batting .287 the last five outings.

Leading the way has been sophomore Hillary Hentges, who is 4-for-8 (.500 avg), with one run scored, one home run, three RBI and a slugging percentage of .875. Another sophomore, Hannah Campbell, is batting .400 (4-for-10), with four runs scored and one RBI, while going a perfect 5-of-5 on the base paths.

Senior Kacey Scharnhorst is third on the team in average (.375) the last five games, but leads the Owls in hits (six), runs scored (five) triples (two), RBI (six) and total bases (13).

On the rubber, the trio of Julie Scheer, Allison Waskow and Bre Logan have combined for a 2.92 ERA and 37 strikeouts, while opposing hitters are batting just .194 against the staff.

Scheer is 2-0 with a 0.00 EREA in 7.2 innings of work, while Waskow is 2-1 in her last three starts, working 21.0 innings, allowing eight runs and striking out a team-high 23 batters.

On the season, the offense has upped its season average to .282 and are led by junior Emily Murphy, hitting .422 in 15 appearances, while adding six runs scored, a team-high six doubles and seven RBI.

Scheer is batting .375 (6-for-16), while Sydnae Hatton is batting .319 in 17 games and is third on the team with seven runs scored. Alexi Cavins is the fourth Owl to be hitting over .300 (.316 avg), while Scharnhorst is now batting .302 (16-for-53) and has tallied 10 RBI.

Campbell continues to impress in her sophomore season, hitting .292 and leads the team with 12 runs scored and eight stolen bases, while Caroline Sicht and Hentges are both batting .286, with Sicht bringing the power with two home runs and 12 RBI.

Inside the circle, Waskow leads the Owls staff with a 3.65 ERA and owns a 3-5 record in a team-high 11 appearances. The Canton, Illinois, native, has thrown in 53.2 innings, allowing 28 runs and has struck out a team-high 46 batters.

Logan, a Columbia, Missouri, native, is 2-2 on the year with a 4.65 ERA in 40.2 innings pitched and has totaled 32 strikeouts, while Scheer is 2-3 in five starts and has added up 10 strikeouts in 17.2 innings.

The Spartans, meanwhile, are hitting the field for the first time this season on Thursday afternoon, as the team is taking on Clarke College.

In 2014, Missouri Baptist finished the year 25-29 overall (11-11 AMC) play, while offensively hitting .289 as a team and held a pitching staff ERA of 3.46.

This season, the team returns Kelsey Snider at the dish, as she finished the 2014 campaign with a team-high .370 average in 42 starts, while totaling 28 runs scored, five RBI and 15 stolen bases. Mariah Randazzo is also back for another year at MBU, as she is coming off a .339 average, while adding 27 runs scored and 29 RBI.

On the rubber, the Spartans return ace Jena Trombley for her senior year, as she looks to build off a 10-8 record and a 2.63 ERA in 21 starts.  Leading win getter from 2014, Andrea Chessor, is back as well and looking to build off her 15-win season in 177.2 innings pitched, while earning an ERA of 3.59 and totaling a team-high 103 strikeouts.
