Owls Earn Doubleheader Sweep In Florida On Monday Afternoon

Waskow, didn't allow a single run, only gave up two hits and struck seven batters out in seven innings of work.

CLAREMONT, FLA.—The William Woods University softball team earned a pair of wins Monday afternoon as they defeated University of Northwestern Ohio 2-0 in game one and followed that up with a win in game two, 7-4 over West Virginia University Institute of Technology.

Pitching was the story in game one, as both teams combined for two runs, four hits total and four walks, and a hit batter for the only base runners of the game.
 
The score would remain scoreless till the top of the fourth as William Woods (12-12; 4-0 AMC) would get on the score bored first, as Hannah Campbell reached base on a walk to lead off the inning. Campbell would then steal second and then make it to third on a groundout by Sydnae Hatton. Campbell would then score as Kacey Scharnhorst reached on a fielder's choice to give the owls the 1-0 lead.
 
The Owls would answer again in their half of the fifth as Caroline Sicht walked to start the inning, followed by a sac bunt by Shelby LeCuru, which put Sicht on second. After a Macy Wierschem fly out, Sam Parsons hit a two-out single to right center to bring home Sicht and a 2-0 win as neither team was able to bring in another run.
 
The Racers (5-7) were only able to get two runners, one in the sixth inning and one in the seventh inning, but were unable to bring them in.
 
Allison Waskow was magnificent on the rubber, as she pitched all seven innings, only giving up two hits, striking out seven and did not walk anyone to pick up her sixth victory on the season.
 
Chelsea Miller was hit with the loss as she pitched seven innings, giving up two earned runs, on two hits, two strikeouts and two walks.

Offense was the story of game two, as West Virginia Tech was able to get on the bored first in the top of the second.  Kayla Harbin left off the inning with a single to right field. The next batter Megan Blythe doubled to give the Golden Bear's runners at second and third. After a strikeout to Mackenzie Wilson, Hannah Calhoun walked to load the bases followed by another walk to MaKayla Waugh, scoring Harbin to give West Virginia Tech the early 1-0 advantage.
 
After a scoreless top half of the, the Owls were able to score four runs in their half of the fourth. Megan Cooper doubled and then advanced to third on a wild throw, to start the inning. Campbell followed with a RBI single to bring home the Owls first run of the game. After a Campbell stolen base, and a walk to LeCuru, Scharnhorst hit an infield fly, to bring up Emily Murphy, who hit a two- out triple, and then would later score to make the score 4-1 in William Woods favor.
William Woods would add two more to their score in the bottom of the fourth as LeCuru singled, stole second and then scored on a RBI triple by Scharnhorst. Murphy would single up the middle to bring in Scharnhorst and give her three RBI's in the game. Owls however, would strand Murphy at first but still hold on to the 6-1 lead heading to the fifth.
 
In the top of the fifth West Virginia Tech would load the bases, with just one out, but William Woods starter Bre Logan would strike out Blythe and Kayla Jones to end the threat and keep the score 6-1 WWU.
 
The Golden Bear's would score again in the top of the sixth, with runners at second and third, MiKayla craze would hit a sac fly to left enter scoring the second West Virginia Tech run. With runners on first and third, Logan got Breigh Renner, to ground into a 1-3-2 double play to end the inning and to keep the score at 6-2.
 
The Owls would answer in the bottom of the sixth as pinch hitter Beth Begemann doubled with one out.  Campbell, running for Begemann, would advance to third on a LeCuru fly out and then score, as Scharnhorst singled to left, to give the Owls a 7-2 lead.
 
In the top of the seventh, Stephanie Seewer, led off with a double and then would score as Harbin reached on an error by the Owls defense. Harbin would then score on a two-out RBI single by Calhoun to make the score 7-4. With the tying run in the on deck circle, Logan was able to get Waugh to fly out to end the game and give the Owls their second win of the afternoon.
 
Bre Logan improved to 5-3 on the season after pitching seven innings, giving up four runs (two earned runs), 10 hits, six strikeouts, and two walks.
 
Mackenzie Wilson fell to 4-2 on the year as she went 5.2 innings pitched giving up seven runs (six earned runs) on nine hits, eight strikeouts, and four walks. Kyla Shull went 0.1 innings with one strikeout, no runs, and no hits.
 
The Owls will be back in action on Wednesday March 23, as they will head to Lakeland, Florida for a doubleheader against Southeastern University, first pitch scheduled at 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT).
