FULTON, Mo.—The No. 19-ranked William Woods University softball team will play two non-conference games at Backer Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon, as the Owls will host Culver-Stockton College. First-pitch of the game one doubleheader will be thrown at 2 p.m.
The Owls (5-10), are coming off a 1-1 showing in its home opener on Sunday afternoon, as the team won game one 2-0 against Westminster College, behind the two-run shot off the bat of
Hillary Hentges and the pitching performance of
Julie Scheer.
In game two, however, Briar Cliff was able to avenge a loss they suffered against Williams Woods the prior day and won 7-1 in the finale.
In its last four games, the Owls are 2-2 and at the dish, the team has been led by Hentges, who is hitting .500 (3-for-6) with one run scored, one home run and two RBI.
Sydnae Hatton continues to swing the bat well, as she is hitting .375 (3-for-8) with one run scored and owns a team-high on-base percentage of .545, while
Kacey Scharnhorst is hitting .333 and leads the team in hits (four), triples (two) and RBI (three).
On the rubber the last four outings, the trio of Scheer,
Allison Waskow and
Bre Logan have combined for a 2.33 ERA in 27.0 innings pitched and totaled 23 strikeouts.
Scheer holds a perfect 0.00 ERA, after hurling her first shutout and complete game against Westminster College, as she allowed five hits and struck out four. Waskow, a freshman, is 1-1 in her last two starts, has an ERA of 2.00 and has struck out 13 batters in 14.0 innings of work.
As a team at the plate through 15 games thus far, the Owls are batting .265, with 53 runs scored, 15 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 42 RBI.
Junior
Emily Murphy has been leading the offense with a team-high .436 average (17-for-39), with three runs scored, five doubles, six RBI and a slugging percentage of .615. Hatton is hitting .310 (13-for-42), with six runs scored, while
Macy Wierschem is batting .290 (9-for-31) and is tied for the team lead with seven RBI.
Sophomore
Hannah Campbell is hitting .286 (12-for-42), but leads the team with 11 runs scored, while Scharnhorst (.283 avg) and Sicht (.270 avg) are right behind Campbell, as the duo is also tied with Wierschem having seven RBI.
Inside the circle, WWU has a team ERA of 4.11, with Waskow leading the charge with a 3.60 ERA in 10 appearances. The Canton, Illinois, native has thrown in 46.2 innings, has collected four complete game and owns a K/BB ratio of 36/14.
Logan, a Columbia, Missouri, native, is 2-2 on the year with a 4.20 ERA and has earned one shutout on the year. The freshman has struck out 22 batters, while opposing hitters are batting just .268 against the hurler.
Culver-Stockton, whom is coming off a 19-24 (7-11 Heart of America Athletic Conference) overall record last year, is off to a 1-1 start in 2015, as they split its season opening series against Ashford University, falling in game one 19-4, but responded with a 14-6 win in game two.
On the season, the Wildcats are batting .484, led by Brittni Hagemeier, as in game two against Ashford, she went 4-for-4 with one scored, three doubles and four RBI. Kim Myers (.667 avg) and Halie Hall (.600 avg) are both batting over .600 and have hit one home run each, while Sam Bolin is hitting .571 (4-for-7) with two runs scored, four doubles and four RBI. On the rubber, C-SC has a team ERA of 13.30 and is led by Bolin with a 1-0 record and has collected a 7.00 ERA in 5.0 innings pitched.
