Softball Looks To Take Two From AMC Rival Columbia College

LeCuru is batting .500 (7-for-14) in the last four games and has totaled three RBI.
FULTON, Mo.—The William Woods University softball team continues its play in front of the home crowd on Tuesday afternoon, as the Owls host American Midwest Conference (AMC) rival, Columbia College, at Backer Sports Complex. First-pitch will be thrown at 2 p.m.

The Owls (19-20; 8-6 AMC), split its doubleheader action in its last time out against first place Lyon College, as the team won game one 8-0 (6 innings), but fell in heartbreaking fashion, 5-3 (9 innings) in game two.

In the win against the Scots, the Owls scored eight runs on 14 hits, with six different players totaling at least two hits in the outing. On the rubber, meanwhile, freshman Bre Logan, picked up her eighth win on the year in impressive fashion, as she allowed just two hits and struck out three over six innings of work.

The offensive outburst has upped the teams' batting average in conference play to .332, with Sydnae Hatton and Hannah Campbell leading the way, as the duo is hitting .429 (15-for-35), while combining for 14 runs scored, 12 RBI and 10 stolen bases.

Senior Kacey Scharnhorst has hit her way to a .378 average (14-for-37) in 12 AMC games, but does lead the Owls in RBI (16), total bases (26) and slugging percentage (.703). Shelby LeCuru has started to swing a hot bat, as she is batting .375 (12-for-32), while scoring eight runs and adding six RBI.

Inside the circle, freshman pitchers Allison Waskow and Bre Logan have combined for an ERA of 2.74 in 12 appearances.

Waskow, a Canton, Illinois, native, is 2-3 in her last six starts, having an ERA of 1.56 in 40.1 innings pitched and has struck out 29 batters. Logan, is 4-3 in her last seven games against AMC foes, having an ERA of 4.03 and has totaled 30 strikeouts.

On the year, the Owls are batting .297 and are led by Emily Murphy's .350 average. The Tulsa, Oklahoma, native, has also totaled 11 runs scored and 20 RBI. Campbell is second on the team in average (.333), but leads the team in runs scored (27) and stolen bases (21).

Scharnhorst and Hatton are both hitting .330, with Scharnhorst leading the way in RBI (34), while Hatton has scored 17 runs and added seven stolen bases. Caroline Sicht, an Ashland, Missouri, native, leads the Owls with five home runs and is batting .278, while Macy Wierschem and LeCuru are batting .271 and .267 respectively.

Waskow leads the pitching staff with a 2.59 ERA in 23 appearances and has collected seven wins and four shutouts in 121.2 innings pitched, while striking out 99 batters. Logan leads the team with eight wins, while owning a 3.83 ERA in 102.1 innings pitched and has struck out 76 hitters.

Columbia College (19-14; 10-6 AMC), is currently one game ahead of the Owls in the AMC standings, as they are coming off a doubleheader loss against Benedictine University at Springfield, falling 6-3 in game one and 5-4 in game two, which snapped the teams' three game winning streak.

On the year, the Cougars are batting .320 as a team and are led by Carly Spalding's .496 average (59-for-119), while also leading the team in runs scored (50), hits (59), triples (six), RBI (30) and stolen bases (43).

Julianna Waldner is batting .347 (25-for-72) and has contributed 22 RBI, while Allyson Mets (.330 avg) has driven in 29 RBI and hit two home runs. Two other power bats the Owls pitching staff will need to keep an eye out for include Brittiany Tjarks and Jessica Hardy, as they have combined for seven home runs and 26 RBI.

Inside the circle, Paxton Welch leads the team with an 8-7 record and an ERA of 3.16 in 88.2 innings pitched. Amber Boehme is 4-4 on the year with a 3.21 ERA in 48.0 innings of work, while Lauren McCroskie has also picked up four wins on the season.
