Box Score FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's tennis team captured its first win of the 2016-17 season when they defeated NCAA Division II Lindenwood University, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon in Fulton, Missouri.

Lindenwood struck for the first point of the day as the team of Naoufal El Idrissi and Filip Bogic defeated
Oscar Donker and
Stefan Simic, 8-1. However, that would be the only point the Owls would let the Lions have in doubles.
Juan Avellaneda and
David Barbieri defeated Tudor Ghenea and Anvar Akhmetov in No. 3 doubles, 8-2. With the match tied, the Owls took a 2-1 lead going into singles as
Jelmer Van Vliet and Christian Baribier defeated Theo Butaeye and Antoine Barraud, 8-6, in No. 2 doubles.
Stefan Simic exnted the Owls lead to 3-1 after he won in No. 4 singles. Simic defeated Corentin Seywert, 6-0, 6-2. After Simic's match, the Lions slowly started coming back as Naoufal El Idrissi defeated
David Barbieri, in No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Lindenwood tied the match at 3-3 after Theo Butaeye defeated
Oscar Donker, 6-0, 6-4, in No. 3 singles action.
William Woods regained the lead as
Christian Barbieri took down, Filip Bogic, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, giving the Owls a 4-3 lead. The Owls only needed to take one of the last two matches to clinch,
Jelmer Van Vliet, No. 5 singles, clinched the win for the Owls. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Van Vliet came back taking sets, two (7-5), and three (6-3) giving the Owls the match. In No. 6 singles Tudor Ghenea defeated
Juan Avellaneda,2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, October 4th when they host Westminster College at The Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex. The match will start at 4:30 p.m.
