Volleyball Falls to Lynx For First AMC Loss

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team suffered its first American Midwest conference loss of the season as Lindenwood University-Belleville defeated the Owls, 3-1, (25-20, 21-25, 16-25, 24-26).
 
Victoria Day led the Owls with 17 kills in the match. Jessica Jensen led the Owls with 20 digs in the match and Brittney Engelbrecht dished out 43 assists in the match. With her 43 assists, surpassed 3,500 assists for her career, which moved her to second on the all-time career assists list at WWU. Engelbrecht now sits at 3,531 assists and is now 1,606 behind being in first place on the career list.
 
The Owls host St. Louis College of Pharmacy for another AMC match on Thursday, October 6 at 7 p.m. at Anderson Arena.  
 
Game Flow
In the first set, both teams battled point for point for the first eight points keeping the match tied at 8-8. It was not until a kill by Victoria Day that the Owls broke away with a five-point lead, 13-8. The Lynx fought back, but Stephanie Davis and Brittney Engelbrecht did not allow that to happen by adding back to back kills, putting the Owls ahead, 16-10. With Stephanie Cathcart serving the Lynx went on a run and tied the match at 16-16. WWU slowly pulled away from the Lynx and a kill by Abby Ferguson ended the first set with an Owls 25-20 victory.
 
Set two started off like the first, with both teams fighting for the lead. The Owls took the lead by two points, 5-3, after a block by Engelbrecht and Davis as well as a kill from Tory Wiley. It was not long until the Lynx caught up and eventually took the lead by four after a service ace from Cathcart, 10-6. The Owls added a kill from Ferguson but were still trailing by four, 15-11. The Lynx would continue to add to their lead and extended the lead to six, 24-18. The Owls fought and earned three points but eventually fell to the Lynx 25-21.
 
Tied at a set each, the third set was much like the first two both teams going point for point until the Lynx ran away with a four-point lead, putting the Owls behind, 6-2. The Owls would score three more capped by an Elle Gebke service error, putting the Owls down four, 9-5. The Owls picked up momentum after a kill by Ferguson and a block from Davis and Ferguson putting the Owls down, 11-7. The Owls would cut the lead down to three, 14-11, after a kill by Day. The Lynx would run away with the lead again, burying the Owls in another five-point deficit, 17-12. The Owls would score four more points and take another loss, 25-16.
 
The Owls took the lead early in the fourth set at 5-2 after a kill from Engelbrecht. The Owls found themselves at a two-point, 7-5, prior to the Lynx going on a run taking an 11-7 lead over the Owls. Engelbrecht would switch up the flow to score a point for the Owls, but the Lynx would continue to add to their lead putting the Owls behind 15-8. The Owls would take advantage of Lynx mistakes and add two to the score, 15-10. A service run by Day would continue to cut the lead down to three, 116-13. After a few rallies, a kill from Engelbrecht, and a block by Kira Krebill and Abby Ferguson, the Owls tie the match at 19-19. At this point in the match, it was a hitters game with kill for kill on both sides. The Owls took the lead after a kill by Day, 23-22. After battling point for point, the Lynx would eventually take the lead and keep it, winning the set 26-24 and winning the match, 3-1.
