BATESVILLE, Ark. – Junior
Brandon Vice led the Owls with 28 points to lead the William Woods University Men's Basketball team to a 78-72 victory over Lyon College in American Midwest Conference action on Thursday evening.
Trey Mitchell followed Vice with 14 points in the contest.
Deon Pettigrew and
Alec Mulvihill each scored 11 in the contest to round out the Owls double figure scorers.
Klayton Kuschel led the Owls with eight rebounds in the contest.
Jerel Wilhite led the Owls with six assists.
WWU returns to action on Saturday, November 19th when they travel to Conway, Arkansas to face Central Baptist College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
Game Flow
The Scots came out on fire to start the contest as they raced out to an 8-0 lead over the Owls in the first two minutes of the contest. The Owls scored the next five points, cutting the lead down to three, 8-5, after a
Trey Mitchell three-pointer.
After the Owls cut the lead down to three points, 8-5, the Scots went on an 8-2 run taking a nine-point lead, 16-7. WWU continued to battled and got the lead down to six points, 18-12, after a fast break layup by Mitchell.
However, Lyon again stretched the lead back to 11 points, 27-16, with seven minutes to go in the first half. The Owls answered back scoring the next the next seven points, cutting the lead down to four points, 27-23. After the Owls cut the lead down to four, the Scots answered back by going on an 11-0 run taking a 15-point lead with 1:39 left in the half. WWU continued to battled and trimmed the lead down to eight, 38-30, at halftime.
WWU continued to battle in the second half as a three-pointer by Vice put the Owls down six, 43-37, with 15:45 left in the contest. The Scots grew the lead back to 10 but Vice hit another three-pointer putting the lead back down to seven, 47-40.
The lead bounced back and forth between six and 10 points until Lyon stretched the lead to 14 points, 60-46, with nine minutes to go in the contest. Trailing by 14 the Owls continued to battle and trimmed the lead down to eight, 64-56, after a pair of free throws by Vice with 5:32 left in the contest.
The Owls continued to battle held the Scots to two points over the next two minutes and scored six cutting the lead down to four points, 66-62, with three minutes to go in the contest. Lyon continued to lead and had a four point lead, 70-66, with 1:51 to go the Owls held the Scots to two points for the remainder of the game.
While holding the Scots to two points, the Owls closed the game by scoring 12 points. A three by Mitchell cut the lead down to one, 70-69, with 1:33 left in the game.
Deon Pettigrew gave the Owls a lead by hitting a three-pointer with 41 seconds left in the contest. After Pettigrew's three, the Owls lead 72-70. The Owls hit its free throws down the stretch and came back for a 78-72 victory over Lyon.
