Avila Sweeps Owls Softball

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Softball team suffered its first two losses of the season at home losses of the season after being swept by Avila University on Sunday afternoon. The Owls dropped game one, 8-1, before falling 12-4, in game two.
 
Game One
Game Flow

The Owls and Eagles offenses came out quietly in the game one of a doubleheader as they only collected three hits in the first two and a half innings. In the bottom of the third inning, the Owls scored the first run of the game. With runners on second and third, Brailee Schulte laid down a squeeze bunt scoring Hannah Campbell putting the Owls ahead 1-0.
 
The contest remained 1-0 in favor of the Owls until the top of the fifth inning. Madison Mueth doubled to right field and advanced to third on a stolen base. Araceli Juarez singled through the right side scoring one for Avila. The second run for the Eagles came in on a Mackenzie Pritchett single putting the Owls down, 2-1.
 
William Woods looked to have a break the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out and the bases loaded Amanda Bouchey came to the plate and grounded into a fielders' choice. With two outs, the bases were still loaded put Madison McCormick struck out ending the inning.
 
The Eagles broke the game wide open in the top of the sixth inning when they scored six runs on seven hits. After the top of the sixth inning the Owls trailed 8-1.
 
WWU threatened again in the bottom of the seventh inning when they had runners on second and third with two outs, however, they could not get the run across as McCormick flied out ending the contest and the Owls dropped game one, 8-1.

Game Two
Game Flow

Avila broke the game open in the top of the first inning off of Sierra Jacques. With one out, Madison Price singled to shallow center field. Samantha Dexter came up to bat and took a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence putting the Eagles ahead, 2-0.
 
The Owls answered back in the bottom of the first inning, as they scored four runs on three hits taking the lead. Sydnae Hatton drew a walk to lead the game off. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Campbell. With one out, Brailee Schulte singled to right field scoring Hatton. Later in the inning, the Owls had runners on first and third with two outs and Amanda Bouchey drew a walk to load the bases. Alli Massey followed with a double down the field line scoring two and putting William Woods ahead, 4-2.
 
However, after the first inning, the Owls offense went quietly as they did not score for the remainder of the game and Avila's offense started to click. The Eagles scored at least one run in each inning the rest of the contest. The Eagles tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the third inning when they scored a run on a Madison Mueth single.
 
Avila broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning, as they scored seven runs on five hits and took advantage of one William Woods error. The Eagles inning was capped off by a two run single by Abby King through the right side. After the top of the fourth inning, the Eagles led the Owls, 11-4.
 
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Massey doubled down the left field line. The next two hitters were retired and Sydnae Hatton followed with a single to put runners on first and third, however, the two runners were stranded on base as Campbell flied out to center.
 
Avila added one more run in the top of the fifth inning. Kaycee Dexter singled through the left side scoring one and putting the Eagles ahead, 12-4.
 
With one out, Brailee Schulte singled through the left side putting a runner on base. She advanced to second on a ground out. Amanda Bouchey drew a walk putting two runners on base. The runners advanced on an illegal pitch putting the runners on second and third. Alli Massey drew a walk loading the bases, however, the Owls could not get a run across the plate as the next hitter was retired ending the game.
