Softball Takes Two from Pharmacy

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Softball team recorded its fourth and fifth shutouts of the season on "Think Pink" day at Backer Field. The Owls shutout Saint Louis College of Pharmacy 8-0, 8-0 for the double header.
 
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, April 12 when they travel to Columbia, Mo. to face Columbia College. First-pitch is set for 2 p.m.
 
Game One
Game Flow

After a scoreless two and a half innings, William Woods got the offense going in the bottom of the third. Ari Arnold led off with a single to right field. She moved to third base on back-to-back sacrifice bunts. Hannah Campbell followed with a single to right scoring Arnold and putting the Owls on the board.
 
Owls starter Sierra Jacques did not allow St. Louis Pharmacy to get anything going offensively. After issuing a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth inning, Jacques retired the next three hitters.
 
The offense came to life in the fourth inning for the Owls as they scored seven runs on seven hits and took advantage of one Pharmacy error. The inning started with a double by Beth Begemann. Begemann came into score on Hillary Hentges double. With one out and Hentges on third, Amanda Bouchey singled to right field scoring the second run of the inning for William Woods.
 
Arnold followed with a single putting two runners on for Shelby LeCuru. LeCuru tripled scoring two and growing the Owls lead to 5-0. The Owls were not done as Sydnae Hatton brought in LeCuru. Later in the inning Hatton stole home and Emily Murphy reached on a fielder's choice scoring Hannah Campbell putting the Owls ahead 8-0.
 
The Owls needed three outs to end the first contest by the mercy rule. Jacques allowed a leadoff single before retiring the next three hitters and the Owls came away with a 8-0 victory in game one.

Game Flow

William Woods pitching came out strong in game two, as Bre Logan only allowed three hits for the entire contest and she set Pharmacy down in order in the top of the first order.
 
After ending the first game with the bats on fire, the Owls came out reaching base early and often in the second. With one out, Campbell singled to left-center. She then stole second base. After a groundout, Campbell was standing on second base with two outs. Beth Begemann drew a walk and Madison McCormick followed with a walk to load the bases. Alli Massey singled to left scoring one. The next batter was retired ending the inning and stranding three owls on base.
 
St. Louis Pharmacy had a little momentum starting the second inning on Logan. After an out to start, Kara Terry singled. After a strike out, Kristen Kolkmeyer drew a walk putting two runners on. However, Logan settled down retiring the next hitter ending the inning.
 
Pharmacy's offense looked to be getting a two out rally going in the third inning. After Logan retired the first two, Kate Toler singled to third. Taylor Evans drew a walk putting two runners on base again for Pharmacy. Like the second inning, Logan settled down retired the next hitter and keeping the Owls ahead, 1-0.
 
The Owls grew the lead to 3-0 in the third inning. With Hentges on first, Beth Begemann tripled to right-center scoring Hentges. Madison McCormick followed with a single to left scoring Begemann.
 
William Woods grew its lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning. With a runner on second, Campbell followed with a triple to right center. Campbell scored on the next batter when she scored Hentges ground out.
 
WWU continued to kept Pharmacy's offense out of sync as Logan struck out the first two of the fifth inning. After a single, Logan got Kate Toler to ground out to second to end the fifth inning.
 
The Owls continued to add to its lead and the lead grew to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. McCormick doubled to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After the next two hitters were retired, McCormick scored on another Pharmacy wild pitch.
 
Logan continued to dominate in the contest as she retired Pharmacy in order in the top of the sixth inning. The Owls needed two runs to end the game on the mercy rule heading to the bottom of the sixth.
 
Olivia Imhoff drew a wlak to start the inning. After an out, Emily Murphy grounded into a fielder's choice, where Imhoff was retired at second. With two outs, an a runner on first, Hentges ended the game by taking a 3-2 pitch over the center field fence for a two run home run ending the game and giving the Owls a 8-0 lead.
