POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – The William Woods University Volleyball team came back from being down 2-1 to defeat College of the Ozarks, 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 29-27, 5-10) on Thursday night in Point Lookout, Missouri.
Victoria Day led the way for the Owls as she had 22 kills in the match.
Abby Ferguson and
Tory Wiley followed with 14 kills apiece, while
Stephanie Davis followed with 11 kills.
Brittney Engelbrecht recorded 55 assists on the match; while
Jessica Jensen had 38 digs.
The Owls return to action Wednesday, September 21st when they host Missouri Valley College at 7 p.m. at Anderson Arena.Â
Game Flow
In set one, the Bobcats raced out to an early lead as they scored the first six points. The Owls took advantage of Bobcat errors and after a kill by Day, the Owls found themselves on the board. After a back to back kill by Ferguson and Day, the Owls cut the lead down to two, 8-6. The two teams rallied back and forth until the set was tied at 13-13, with the help of a kill by Wiley. The set went point for point but the Owls could not get all the way back and they dropped the first set, 25-22.
The second set the Owls took control by scoring the first four points with Ferguson adding a kill. Bobcats would cut the lead down to three when Alex Spears had a kill, 12-9. WWU slowly started to extend its lead in the set as they grew its lead to seven, 20-13. College of the Ozarks slowly started to come back but could not cut the lead any closer than three points and the Owls took set two, 25-20.
In set three, the Owls came out with authority with kills from Ferguson and
Kira Krebill finding themselves with a four-point lead, 5-1. The Bobcats would then come back cutting the lead down to two when Makensi Taylor adds a kill,10-8. The set would be tied eight more times before College of the Ozarks broke away with a two-point lead and a kill by Logan Allen, and the Bobccats taking the third set, 25-23.
The fourth set started out with a kill by Wiley putting the Owls ahead early. The two teams would rally and the match was tied at 4-4 after a kill by Ferguson. The Owls would then break away with a four-point lead during a service run by
Kayton Coffee, including an ace, 9-5. After the Owls took a four point lead the Bobcats came back and neither team would pull away in the set. College of the Ozarks and William Woods were locked in a deadlock as the fourth set saw 30 ties. With the set tied at 27-27, An attack error by the Bobcats and a Ferguson kill, gave the Owls the set win, 29-27.
Set five started off with two kills by Ferguson and a kill by Day making the set score 3-1. The two teams went point for point once again, but the Owls never lost the lead. After a service run by Coffee and a kill by Davis, the Owls found themselves at set point 14-9. The Bobcats fought back but did not have enough to stop the Owls. After a Davis kill, the Owls took the match, 15-10.
