Owls Volleyball Sweeps Freed-Hardeman

HENDERSON, Tenn.— The William Woods University Volleyball team won its fifth road game of the season when they swept Freed-Hardeman University, 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-19) in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Volleyball Game of the Week.  
 
The Owls tallied 36 kills in the match and were led by senior Victoria Day, who had nine. Stephanie Davis and Tory Wiley followed with eight kills apiece. Brittney Engelbrecht dished out 26 assists and Jessica Jensen had 19 digs to lead the Owls. The Owls had 10 blocks in the match.
 
The Owls return to action on Saturday, September 24th when they travel to Conway, Arkansas to face Central Baptist College. Match starts at Central Baptist at 11 a.m.
 
Game Flow
In the first set, the Owls broke away with the lead early, 3-2, after a kill by Victoria Day. With Jessica Jensen serving, the Owls rallied off three straight points taking a 6-2 lead. The Lions fought back, but after kills by Brittney Engelbrecht and Stephanie Davis, the Owls were sitting at a six-point lead, 12-5. Throughout the set, the Owls never lost the lead and stretched the lead to 18-10 after a Freed-Hardeman attack error. After a few rallies the Owls ran with the lead and ended the set with a kill by Day, claiming the first set, 25-21.
 
The second set was a teeter-totter of points where the Owls took control early but the Lions did not let the Owls run too far with the lead. The match was tied six times before either team reached ten points. With the Lions ahead, 7-5, a service run by Day included an ace and a kill by Stephanie Davis put the Owls ahead, 12-7. WWU continued to add to its lead and the lead grew to 10 points, 23-13. Kills by Davis and an attack error by Alex Britt gave WWU the second set, 25-13.
 
The Lions took control of the third set scoring the first two points of the set. The Owls did not let them run too far away with the lead for they had tied the set at 5-5 after a kill by Day. After a service run by Kameryn Bellinger, the Owls took the lead, 7-5. The Lions made one more run at the Owls as they took a one-point lead, 11-10 after a Kira Krebill attack error. After the Owls tied the match back up, the Lions never regained the lead. After three straight Freed-Hardeman attack errors the Owls led 16-13. Freed-Hardeman cut the lead down to three, 22-19, but did not get any closer. Kills by Wiley, Krebill and a block by Krebill and Day gave the Owls the set, 25-19. The Owls came away with the sweep and improved to 2-0 in the AMC.
