FULTON, Mo. – This Saturday, January 21st, at 11 a.m. the 2017 William Woods University Hall of Fame Class which includes Rachel Baker (Women's Basketball), Nan Downey (Softball), Michelle Krassinger (Softball) and
Barry Doty (Men's and Women's Golf), will be formally be inducted.
This year's inductees, will join an already prestigious Hall of Fame Class, which includes Helen Stephens, former athletic director Roger Ternes, Lana Unnewehr-Brooks (Women's Basketball), the 2002 men's volleyball team, Erin Jewell (Women's Soccer), Ashley Windmiller (Softball), Patty Wilderman (Women's Basketball), , Ashley Morgan (Women's Soccer), Saysha Sappenfield-Nevins (Softball),
Tracy Gastineau(softball), Larry York (former Athletic Director), Colleen Dailey (Women's Soccer/Softball) and Dana and Sue Anderson (Contributor's).
The incoming candidates were selected from a pool of nominees submitted by the Hall of Fame Nomination Committee, including suggestions from members of the public and current WWU Hall of Fame Inductees, for their outstanding accomplishments, exemplary service or recognition and distinction to William Woods.
Barry Doty, is the current Men's and Women's Head Golf Coach and has guided the Owls golf programs since 2002.
"I was quite surprised when I received the call from
Jason Vittone and became overwhelmed with emotion," stated
Barry Doty. "I immediately began reflecting on all of those (past and present) who made this possible, our players, assistant coaches, athletics department staff and our university administration. To me this is a recognition of accomplishment for the men and women who have been members of our golf programs over the years and I am honored to have been elected to represent them in the hall of fame."
Doty is currently in his 15th year as head coach. He has compiled a long list of awards during his tenure including: 41 All-Americans, 27 Coach of the Year Awards (AMC, Region and Unaffiliated Group), 22 National Championship appearances, 15 Conference/Region Players of the Years, two players named to the All-Nicklaus team and two Phil Mickelson Award Winners and one NAIA Golfstat Cup Winner.
He has guided the men's or women's golf team to 11 top 10 finishes at the NAIA National Championships and seven teams to a top five finish at the NAIA National Championships. At the 2015 and 2016 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship, Doty coached the Owls to a runner-up finish both years. In 2015, the Owls Men's golf team finished runner-up at the NAIA Men's Golf National Championships.
Both the men's and women's golf teams have spent numerous weeks as the number 1 team in the nation by the NAIA Coaches' Polls, Golfstat and Golf Coaches' Association of America. Ending the 2016 regular season, the William Woods golf programs ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Under the guidance of Doty, the Owls golf programs have combined to defeat its opponents by over 100,000 stokes. The Owls are 1,522 matches above .500 under Doty. They have 2165 wins compared to only 643 losses.
Since 2002, Doty has led the women's golf team to 82 tournament victories while also guiding the men's golf team to 55 tournament victories. Over the past three seasons, the men's and women's teams have combined for a 55-4-1 record against NCAA Division I teams.
The women's golf team has been ranked in every poll since 2003 and has not lost to an unranked NAIA Team since 2003. They also have not lost an American Midwest Conference opponent ever.
On the men's side, Doty has been named a National Coach of the Year finalist in 2014, 2015 and 2016. He was also a finalist to Coach the U.S Team for the Palmer Cup in 2014 and 2016.
Barry and his wife Diana reside in Columbia, Mo.
