Men’s Basketball Falls in AMC Game of the Week

PARKVILLE, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team dropped the American Midwest Conference Men's Basketball Game of the Week, as Park University defeated the Owls, 70-53. The loss drops the Owls to 16-10 on the season.
 
Torin Washington led the Owls with 10 points. Jonny Woolf led the Owls with eight rebounds. WWU's offense struggled shooting as they shot a season-low 33.3 percent from the floor on the contest. William Woods also struggled at the free throw line as they were 10-of-22 for the contest.
 
WWU returns to action on Tuesday, February 14th when they travel to Belleville, Illinois to face Lindenwood University-Belleville in American Midwest Conference action. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
 
Game Flow
In a defensive slugfest, the Owls and Pirates came out struggling to score in the contest. Four minutes into the game, Park led the Owls, 5-4. Darrien Dickey and Brandon Vice hit the two shots in the first four minutes. However, the Owls offense cooled off as they combined to make five field goals in the first half of the contest.
 
Park slowly started pulling away from the Owls and after a pair of free throws by Xavielle Brown the Pirates led by eight, 13-5, with 11:12 left in the first half. Deon Pettigrew hit a jumper in the paint but after the jumper by Pettigrew, the Pirates grew its lead to 1o points, 18-8, with 8:45 left in the contest.
 
WWU continued to chip away at the Park lead, as a Washington jumper put the Owls down six, 19-13, with 5:24 left in the half. Park extended the lead to 12 points, 27-15, after a BJ Watson three-pointer with 1:50 before halftime. William Woods score the final two points of the half on a Dickey layup, and the Owls trailed by 11, 31-20, at halftime.
 
Over the first four minutes of the second half the Owls only hit one jumper, a three-pointer by Jonny Woolf. During that time the Pirates grew the lead to 16 points, 39-23, after a Watson three-pointer. Three minutes later, the Pirates would grow the lead to 19, 43-24, with 13 minutes to go in the contest.
 
WWU answered back with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes of the contest. During the stretch DaShaun Stark and Trey Mitchell hit a three-pointer and the Owls trailed by 11, 43-32. After getting the lead down to 11, Park answered and grew the lead back to 18 points, 50-32, with 9:40 left.
 
Park slowly grew its lead to 25 points, 68-43, late in the second half. WWU closed out the game on a 10-2 run but it was not enough as they Owls were defeated by Park, 70-53, in the AMC Men's Basketball Game of the Week.
