Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – (Full Results) The No. 16 William Woods University men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2017 spring season on Sunday afternoon to NCAA Division II, Rockhurst University, 5-4. The loss is the first loss for the Owls this season.
Competing in singles action first the Hawks of Rockhurst earned the first point as Joe Ibarra took fourth singles over
Marcos Vinicius Prates Constantino. Ibarra won the match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Rockhurst earned the second point of the match as Daniel Chmielewski defeated
Oscar Barreiro, 6-3, 1-6, 10-3, in No. 3 singles.
WWU collected its first point of the day in No. 1 singles when
Christian Barbieri defeated Jonas Stropus, 6-4, 6-2. The win for
Christian Barbieri in singles one was his third victory of the season. After C. Barbieri took the point for the Owls, Rockhurst won the next two singles matches. The Hawks took number two singles and number five singles. Decho Valev defeated
Johnnie Carmichael, 6-1, 7-5, in No. 2 singles, while Nicolas Riveros defeated
Oscar Donker, 6-3, 7-5, in No. 5 singles.
William Woods collected its second point of the day in No. 6 singles when
David Barbieri defeated Antonio Mizuno 6-3, 6-3. WWU found itself down 4-2 heading into doubles action.
In doubles, WWU cut the Hawks lead in half as
Johnnie Carmichael and
Oscar Barreiro defeated Joe Ibarra and Nicolas Leon, 8-0, to be the first doubles match done. WWU clinched the match with an 8-6 victory in No. 1 singles as Decho Valev and Daniel Chmielewski defeated
Christian Barbieri and Macros Vinicius Prates Constantino. WWU earned the last point of the day by taking No. 3 singles when
Christopher Vleeming Ortiz and
David Barbieri defeated Nicolas Riveros and Luke Salisbury, 8-6.
William Woods returns to action on Wednesday, March 1st when they travel to Topeka, Kansas to face NCAA Division II Washburn University.
