Owls Tennis to Open Postseason Play Friday

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's and women's tennis programs head to Olathe, Kan. to participate in the Heart of America/American Midwest Conference Unaffiliated Group Tournament this weekend.
 
On the women's side, the Owls enter the tournament with an 8-9 record on the season. WWU has won its last two matches, including its last match over Missouri Valley College, 7-2, on Tuesday, April 18th. William Woods is the tournament's top seed and will play the winner of the No. 8 and No. 9 seed match.

On the season, the Owls are 23-28 in doubles and 38-46 in singles action. Leading the Owls in wins on the season is Alba Salinas, who is 7-6 in singles on the season. Salinas has won her last two matches. WWU women's team has two doubles teams ranked by the ITA. Leading the Owls double team is Julia Mulder and Chelsea Steward, who are ranked 8th in the nation. Zlata Shuraeva and Alba Salinas find themselves behind them ranked 24th.
 
The Owls have four players ranked in the top 50 by the Oracle/ITA rankings. Leading the Owls is Karyna Sagalai. Sagalai finds herself as the 16th best singles player in the NAIA. Zlata Shuraeva finds herself dropping six spots this ranking to No. 26 in singles.

On the men's side, the Owls enter the tournament with an 11-5 record on the season. This season they set school records, jumping to No. 8 in the NAIA Men's Tennis Coaches' Top 25 poll. The men's team enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed and will play the winner of Missouri Baptist and Baker University.

On the season, the Owls men's team is 32-15 in doubles and 56-29 in singles play. Leading the Owls in wins is Oscar Barreiro. The freshman is 11-2 in singles action on the season, including being 5-0 playing No. 2 singles. Not only does Barreiro have an 11-2 record in singles he is 10-1 in doubles when he is teamed with Johnnie Carmichael. The duo is 10-0 when they are playing No. 2 doubles.
 
The Owls men's tennis team has three players ranked in the top 50 in singles. Leading the way for the Owls men's team is Oscar Barreiro who comes in at No. 7. Christian Barbieri and Johnnie Carmichael are the other two singles players to be ranked. Barbieri finds himself ranked 22nd and Carmichael finds himself at No. 24.
