COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods women's basketball team narrowly defeated Cardinal Stritch University at the Columbia College Cougars vs. Cancer Classic Saturday afternoon, 59-56. The win extends the Owl's win streak to two and brings them to 2-0 to start the season.
The Owls host Missouri Valley College on Wednesday, November 7, at 5:30 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls faced a 14-point deficit to start the game and did not get on the board until
Kasey Hazell hit a jump shot in the paint six minutes into the game. The Owls cut the game to eight points as
Tori Nesslage scored four points in the 6-0 run to end the quarter, 20-12.
The Owls continued their run into the second quarter, cutting the game to three points with Hazell's three-pointer.
A three from
Lexy Ganaway put the game within two with six minutes left in the half, 22-20, but CSU pushed their lead back to eight with 2:19 on the clock.
A bucket in the paint from
Peyton Greenlee and a three from
Rylie Cox put the Owls within three to send the game into halftime with the Owls trailing, 30-27.
Five minutes into the second half, the Owls tied the game up for the first time, 37-37. CSU pulled back ahead but a Hazell bucket in the paint put the Owls down by one heading into the final quarter, 44-43.
Katie French scored first in the fourth, giving the Owls their first lead of the game, 45-44.
CSU took the lead back with a three, but Greenlee hit a three less than 30 seconds later to put the lead back with the Owls.
CSU took the lead once more and extended it to four points with 6:52 to play, but a 6-0 run fueled by
Kaycee Gerald gave the Owls a 56-54 lead.
Gerald went 3-4 from the foul line in the remaining 1:30 to give the Owls the 59-56 win.
