Men’s Tennis Defeats No. 15 Mariners and No. 11 Knights

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The William Woods University men's tennis team, presented by Fulton Medical Center, went 2-0 on Thursday. WWU came away with a 5-0 victory over No. 15 College of Coastal Georgia before closing the day with a 5-3 victory over No. 11 Middle Georgia State University.
 
The Owls return to action tomorrow, March 8th when they face Wilkes University in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
 
Coastal Georgia (5-0 WWU victory)
The Owls got back in the win column on Wednesday morning with a 5-0 victory over College of Coastal Georgia. The Mariners were ranked 15th in the nation.

WWU came out and took all three doubles actions on the day. Christian Barbieri and Jesus Amezcua won No. 2 doubles, 8-3. Benjamin Tzchentke and Oscar Barreiro won 8-4 in No. 3 doubles. The team of Javier Callejo and Christopher Vleeming Ortiz won 8-6 in first doubles.
 
The Owls only needed two single points to take the set and WWU's Oscar Barreiro defeated Talic Jamela in No. 3 singles. Barreiro was ahead 4-1 before Jamela retired. Christopher Vleeming Ortiz took the No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
 
The rest of the matches were unfinished and WWU improved to 3-4 on the season.

Middle Georgia State (WWU 5-3 Victory)
The Owls closed out its day with a 5-3 victory over No. 11 Middle Georgia State University. Full results can be seen below.
 
In doubles the Owls took the first point of the match when they took No. 2 doubles. The team of Christopher Vleeming Ortiz and Javier Callejo came way with an 8-1 victory. The Knights came back and took No. 1 doubles. Middle Georgia State continued to battle and took third doubles and the Owls trailed 2-1 heading to singles.
 
In singles action, the Owls Javier Callejo tied the match at 2-2 after taking No. 2 singles. Callejo came away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. WWU took the lead at 3-2 after Christian Barbieri came away with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in No. 1 singles.
 
Leading 3-2, the Knights tied the match at 3-3 after taking No. 4 singles. This would be the last the Knights would get as Jesus Amezcua gave the Owls the lead at 4-3. Amezcua came away with a three-set victory. He dropped the first set before coming back winning the next two.
 
Christopher Vleeming Ortiz came clinched the match for the Owls. Vleeming Ortiz won the first set 6-2 before losing set two, 4-6. With In the third set, Vleeming Ortiz won 6-0 and WWU clinched the match 5-3.
