Men’s Tennis Advance to the Quarterfinals With Victory over Cardinal Stritch

Box Score MOBILE, Ala. – The William Woods University men's tennis team, sponsored by Fulton Medical Center, advanced to the Quarterfinals for the second straight season after defeating Cardinal Stritch University, 5-3, in the second round of the NAIA National Championships.
 
Full results can be seen below. With the win for the Owls, its winning streak is at 10 matches.
 
The Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in doubles as Javier Callejo and Christopher Vleeming Ortiz defeated Augustine Gasica and Simon Alig, 8-0 in No. 1 doubles. The Wolves answered back with an 8-6 victory in No. 2 doubles. William Woods answered back and won No. 3 doubles, 9-7, behind the strong team of Christian Barbieri and Oscar Barreiro.
 
Leading 2-1, the Owls lead grew to 3-1 after Javier Callejo defeated Fabio Perasso, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 2 singles. Following Callejo's victory, teammate Christopher Vleeming Ortiz came away with a 7-6, 6-3, victory in No. 3 singles putting the Owls ahead 4-1.
 
Needing only one more point to clinch the match, the Wolves answered back claiming the next two matches. Cardinal Stritch won No. 5 and No. 1 singles in three sets.
 
Leading 4-3 with two matches to go, Oscar Barreiro clinched the match for the Owls. After dropping the first set, he answered back by wining the next two, 7-6, 6-1 clinching the match and sending the Owls to the quarterfinals.
 
Juan Esteban Duran also dropped the first set and won set two, 6-2, and was leading 2-1 in the third. His match went unfinished.
 
With the win, the Owls advance to play top seed Georgia Gwinnett College in the Quarterfinals. The match is set to start around 4:30 p.m.
