Box Score GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The William Woods University women's tennis team had a successful opening weekend to its fall schedule as they had 10 players in action this weekend and all 10 made the finals of a draw at the DePauw Invite.
Singles Draws
In the no. 1 single draw, the Owls were represented by
Zlata Shuraeva. Shuraeva was defeated by Camila Puente of Northwestern Ohio, 6-4, 7-6 (6) knocking Shuraeva out of the singles tournament.
Ana Zavala played in no. 2 singles for WWU. She came away with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Colleen Morris of DePauw University. In the semifinals, Zavala faced Marina Prediger of UMSL. Prediger came away with the win, 6-4, 3-1 retire knocking Zavala out.
Felicia Cesar played in no. 3 singles for the Owls. In the first matchup of the day, Cesar defeated Sarah Wilder of DePauw 6-3, 6-2. In the semifinals, Cesar squared off against Odette Beagrie of UMSL. Cesar came way with a 7-5, 7-5 victory advancing to the finals.
In the fourth draw of singles action, Korina Zarari played for WWU. She won her first set 6-1, 6-0 over Patricia Dizon of Purdue Northwest. However, she was knocked out after falling to Veronica Dydstrom of Northwestern Ohio, 6-4, 6-3.
The fifth singles draw was were you found
Chelsea Steward. Steward was defeated by Leticia Lunge of UMSL, 6-0, 6-1. Lunge advanced to the finals of the no. 5 singles draw.
Karyna Sagalai played in the no. 6 singles draw. Sagalai and Lily Cameron played to a third set before Sagalai came out on top, winning 7-6 (7-0), 4-6, 10-7. In the semifinals, Sagalai was victorious again with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Bianca Buie. Sagalai advanced to the finals.
In the seventh singles draw for the Owls was
Julia Perez Wienese. After receiving a bye, Perez Wienese won 6-0, 6-1 over Lauren Hickey of DePauw to advance to the finals.
Abigail Lemberger played in the no. 8 singles, she won her first match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 over Susan Harmet of Rose-Hulman. Lemberger received a bye to the finals.
In the final singles draw, no. 9, Asami Terajima won her first match over Mallory Johnson, 6-1, 6-0. She than had a bye into the championships.
Also, playing in the ninth singles draw was
Paige Smith. Smith had a first round bye. In the semifinals, Smith dropped the first set to Kate Stanley. However, after dropping the first set, Smith came back and took the final two, 5-7, 6-0, 10-2, advancing to the finals.
Double Draws
In the no. 1 draw of doubles,
Zlata Shuraeva and
Ana Zavala competed for the Owls. In its first match of the day, they defeated NCAA Division II van Bergen and Dizon from Purdue Northwest, 8-2. In the semifinals, Shuraeva and Zavala defeated Morris and Love 8-5 advancing to the finals.
In the no. 2 draw,
Chelsea Steward teamed with Korina Zarari and they won its first match 8-0 over Banda and Schaffer from Rose-Hulman University. In the semifinals, Steward and Zarari won 8-4 over NCAA Division II Skonieczny and Fitzgerald. With the semifinal win the Owls advanced to the finals.
In the third draw of doubles,
Felicia Cesar and
Karyna Sagalai opened play with an 8-0 victory over Jarvis and Manche. Cesar and Sagalai were defeated in the semifinals by Lopez Bueno and Buie of Missouri – St. Louis.
In the fourth draw, the teams of
Paige Smith and
Julia Perez Wienese were on one half of the bracket and
Abigail Lemberger and Asami Terajima were on the other half. Smith and Perez Wienese came out with an 8-0 victory advancing to the semifinals. They followed up with an 8-2 win over Wachowski and Canul advancing to the finals. The luck was not the same way for the Lemberger and Terajima. They were defeated 8-6 in their opening doubles match.
