Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 7 William Woods University men's tennis team defeated NCAA Division II Rockhurst University 5-2 in their spring season opener Friday afternoon.

The Owls came out of doubles play with the point after Aaron Westerlund and Oscar Barreiro in the No. 1 doubles slot and Christopher Vleeming Ortiz and Javier Callejo in the No. 2 doubles slot grabbed wins. Westerland and Barreiro defeated Masao Perret and Nicolas Leon, 7-5. Vleeming Ortiz and Callejo defeated Santiago Rodriguez and Alex Bernadaz, 6-4. 
 
With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, the Owls grabbed four of six wins to defeat the Hawks 5-2. 
 
Callejo in the No. 1 singles came out with a 6-4, 6-2 win. In the No. 3 singles, Westerlund grabbed an easy 6-1, 6-2 win. Sam Bird picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 4 singles. Nathan Cooke duked it out in the No. 6 spot and came away with the grueling 9-6, 6-4, 14-12 win. 
 
The Owls next compete at Missouri Valley on Saturday, Feb. 23, starting at 10 a.m. They then face McPherson at 3 p.m. following the first match.
