Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The
No. 10 William Woods University Men's Tennis team took home the AMC/HAAC Conference Tournament Championship Saturday afternoon as they defeated No. 25 Missouri Valley 5-0, giving them a bid to the NAIA National Championships.
The Owls defeated No. 8-seed St. Louis College of Pharmacy Friday afternoon to advance to the semifinals round where they defeated No. 5-seed Missouri Baptist 5-0.
The Owls will now compete in the NAIA National Championships beginning on Tuesday, May 14, in Mobile, Ala.
Williams Woods vs. Missouri Valley
WWU swept the Vikings in doubles play, giving them a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Oscar Barreiro and
Christopher Vleeming Ortiz in the No. 3 doubles finished first with an 8-1 win.
Jesus Amezcua and
Zach Frisbie pulled out a 9-7 win in the No. 2 doubles next, and
Javier Callejo and
Aaron Westerlund closed out the doubles play with an 8-6 win in the No. 1 doubles.
William Woods needed just two more points heading in to singles play to clinch the title and earn the automatic bid. Westerlund grabbed the fourth point in the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-2.
Antoine Maraval clinched the match with his 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 2 singles.
